Daventry Road Shops - Reduction of Disabled Bays
Finally Roger has received good news with respect to the disabled bays at Daventry Road Shops

Response from Sara-Louise Allman, Traffic & Network Management:
It was done as part of the Friargate enabling works in 2014. As the lining crew could not gain access at the time, we struggled to get the works done then. Since then the person who designed it has now left the council, I am being asked by a large amount of people about this particular issue so I think we will install the extra bay, but we may need to change the order to do so.
Once I have the final design, I will let you know.

Bus Routes 2 & 3

Roger received many emails with respect to bus routes 2 & 3 linking with route 23 siting: reliability & loss of service as issues.

Here is the response from Martin Hancock, Development Director, National Express Bus:
There are no route or frequency changes for the '2 & 3' sections of the new route.

We are linking the 2 & 3 with the 23, the benefit being that we can increase the frequency on the Allesley Park side of the city and also provide cross city links for both areas of the city.

We will of course monitor the situation in Charminster Drive, it is not a problem that has come to my attention. We do operate the smaller narrower vehicles on the 2 & 3 wherever possible and we have received an additional 5 of these vehicles in the garage for the new extended route. It would be helpful to know whether the problem occurs along the whole length of Charminster Drive or is it towards the 'terminus' end, where the buses wait?

Here are more readable versions of the timetable - Summary timetable of route & a more detailed timetable of route.

Coventry Local Plan Inquiry
Last week, Roger and several local residents, attended the inquiry into the new Coventry Local Plan.

A local plan sets out local planning policies and identifies how land is used, determining what will be built where.

Submissions were made explaining why we felt Baginton Fields should be treated as a special case and protected from future development. It was also suggested that Coventry City Council and possible developers should engage with local residents a lot sooner in the process, so ‘local knowledge’ can have a bigger influence in what happens.

Cheylesmore Ward Forum Agenda
The next meeting of the Cheylesmore Ward Forum will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, 18 October, 2016 at Howes Primary School, Palermo Avenue, Coventry CV3 5EF
Agenda Items:
  • Update on Whitley South

  • Update from Police on Local Issues
Please show that you value this opportunity to listen to and question council officers and councillors about their future plans.

Cheylesmore Community Centre Needs Your Vote
From Tim Latham, Centre Administrator:
Cheylesmore Community Centre has been entered into a Facebook competition by British Gas Local Heroes. This competition will reward the Centre with the most votes the opportunity to have a free electrical makeover done by British Gas electricians. This is a fantastic opportunity but we need your help.

We would be so grateful if you could please vote for us, share the link found on the Community Centre Facebook page to your own page and, if at all possible, pin it to the top so it is the first thing people see.

We would also love you to spread this by word of mouth so we can reach as many people as possible and garner as many votes as we can.

The link to the voting page can be found here:
http://bit.ly/LocalHeroesVote

The competition closes at 00:01 Monday 17th October. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Cheylesmore Residents’ Parking Scheme Review
At last the dates have been set for the review of the Cheylesmore Residents Parking Scheme that was carried out earlier this year.

Residents may attend these meeting but are not allowed to participate. Roger will certainly be attending.

The scrutiny meeting will take place on 16th November, at 2pm, to discuss the findings.
The results will be considered at Cabinet on 29th November at 2pm.

Cheylesmore Library Volunteers
We’ve now had 21 people express an interest in volunteering to enable the library to be kept open. The next volunteers meeting is on Monday 7th November at 3pm at the Cheylesmore Community Centre.

Pauline will be talking about the library at the Ward Forum on Tuesday, 18 October (see above).

If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please email cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com

Revocation of Left Turn Whitley Junction Northbound Off Slip Road
Last week we reported that the issue of the number of cars making an illegal left turn on Whitley Bridge is being resolved by revoking the ‘Turn Right Only’ order.

Many residents have already contacted Roger with respect to this change. Make sure that you have your say, as objections need to be received by 27th October.

Vehicle Crossing Officer
Roger submitted this question to the full Council last week following from the article in our 17th January update
“It was reported in the Coventry Telegraph in January this year (14th), that Coventry City Council intended to employ an officer whose duty was to clamp down on drivers who illegally cross pavements to park their cars on front gardens and in some cases, cause damage to those same pavements.  Currently, some drivers do this and avoid paying for dropped kerbs to be installed outside their property.
In the report, it was stated that Coventry City Council had already signed off for the creation of a 'Vehicle Crossing officer'. Has anyone been employed yet and if so, how long have they been working and has any resident yet been fined?”

Response from Cabinet Member for City Services
Vehicle Crossing Officer was appointed in June 2016 and has been in post for four months.

Residents will not be fined but will be recharged where the Council elects to build a crossing on their behalf. This is only in cases where the crossing is appropriate and meets the application criteria.

The enforcement part of the officer’s work involves employing a process which is fair and allows residents either to desist from crossing the footway with their vehicle or give a reasonable time to apply for a crossing (given the expense involved).

Given the scale of the problem with illegal crossings, and the limited resources available, it has been agreed that the Highways Crossings Officer works on a reactive basis, responding to complaints of illegal crossings (for example from applicants pointing out where there are illegal – unpaid for – crossings) and where there is damage to the Highway. The officer is dealing with individual cases and also street or 'block' cases.

Building a Stronger Britain Together
Received from Sergeant Stuart Randal on 10/10/16:
The Home Office has launched a programme to build a partnership between government and groups working to promote cohesion and tackle extremism in their communities. Through the Building a Stronger Britain Together(BSBT) programme, groups can apply for grant funding, in-kind support or both to help expand their reach and influence.

Representatives from the BSBT programme, M&C Saatchi and the UK Community Foundations will be in Coventry on Wednesday 19 October from 2 – 3:30 pm to answer questions about the support available under the programme. This is an opportunity to learn more about BSBT, meet us and meet other groups.

We look forward to seeing you on October 19 at the Welcome Centre, 47 Parkside, Coventry, CV1 2HG.

Mattress Sellers Back in Coventry
In the Tile Hill area, there have been reports of a white van with ‘Premier Beds and Mattresses’ in the area offering cheap mattresses for sale.
In Daimler Green, a male in a Silver van with ‘Midland Bed Supplies’ has been knocking doors, offering the same.
Whilst there may be legitimate companies with similar names, they would not engage in door to door sales.
The Sleep Council has an extremely good video showing the pitfalls of buying mattresses from people selling from the back of a van.
It shows that mattresses sold in this fashion are often old and discarded ones that have simply been recovered or could pose a safety hazard and even though they may display a Fire Safety Label there is no way of checking if this was genuine or not.
