Sashiko Stitches

This month we have a Japanese inspired box &
a kit to make a simple envelope cushion practising the art of Sashiko stitching.

Keep reading this bumper eMagazine for so many inspirational photos of Sashiko stitching on different projects - plus links to free projects & Sashiko pattern templates.

About Sashiko

Sashiko is a Japanese decorative stitch. For centuries is was used to strengthen & fix fabric using a running stitch (Sashiko means 'little stabs'). Traditionally using white (or sometimes red) thread on indigo fabric. Mostly geometric patterns, modern Sashiko inspired projects use a variety of thread colours.

How To Transfer Design

The Sashiko design is transferred onto the right side of the fabric. There are a number of ways to transfer the design:

  • Place a paper template onto the fabric & use a tracing wheel to imprint design then mark with chalk or air marker;

  • Use chalk paper under the template & go over the design to leave a chalk mark on the fabric;

  • Use a chalk or dressmakers pencil to draw a 1” grid onto fabric. Then use a ruler and/or a circle template to fill in the design; or

  • Transfer the design onto interfacing, although with this method you will be working in reverse ie. on the wrong side of the fabric.

Sashiko Stitching

Use Sashiko thread or 3 strands of cotton embroidery thread. Cut a length of thread which is enough to complete the line. Knot the end of the thread. Pull a stitch through from the wrong side. Leave a few millimetres from the knot to prevent puckering. Likewise when changing direction leave some excess thread on the reverse side.

Unlike traditional embroidery, which is stitched individually, in Sashiko, multiple stitches are made at a time. This helps keep the stitching even & smooth. Put several stitches on your needle before pulling the thread through. Do not pull too tightly or the fabric will pucker. Use uniform running stitch along the design. Keep stitches even and symmetrical. Recommended ration is the stitch length is slightly longer than the gaps ration 3:2 (Although any even running stitch looks good so don't worry too much about this).

We have gone a bit Sashiko overload with our new Pinterest board containing 100 Sashiko pins!
