Last Guest Speaker

Last month Tony presented a power point on the Melbourne ships graveyard. He focused particularly on the four submarines sunk there after WW1. Great photos and interesting background. There was a good turnout of Crew members and plenty of interest. A very nice evening.

Next Guest Speaker

This month we have the Mikhail Lermontov trip to show you. Tony, Kevin and Chris will be showing footage of this massive wreck site.  The team of ten NZSA divers really gave the old girl a good explore. You need to be at this presentation if you are a wreck diver or wannabe!

Be here on Wednesday night for this inspiring talk.  All are welcome, whether divers or not. We present certificates as well. Bring something for the BBQ and a shared meal (beer or wine etc as well if you wish).

Max's Column

Max is our Dive Crew's resident spy, always on the lookout for any oops moments you might have.  Check out what he has spotted this month..
  • We have heard that Jess is due to give birth on 25 January. We will update you with more details from Jess and Ben as they arrive – including baby McLeod
  • Jess is a University lecturer.
  • Remember the scruffy Instructor that used to work at NZSA? Ben is now a senior research technician at the university, working with climate change researchers who sample atmospheric CO2 and methane. Great effort.
  • Peter had a very quiet birthday very recently and – went surfing. We would have expected at least a dive, but surfing at his age….
  • We will miss Darren’s fishing expertise in retail. Peter and Tony may have to hit the books to cover the gap – or learn to talk the talk.
  • Andy M and Evan did a great job demonstrating their skills on their recent Drysuit Specialty courses. Well done.
  • Water temperatures have been climbing and we are seeing more divers dusting off their gear to do some diving.
  • Really wonderful to see the growth in confidence shown by our students on our last PADI Open Water course. Big beaming smiles said it all. Well done.
  • As the resident underwater Archaeologist, Tony got a call-out to identify a newly found shipwreck near Island Bay.
  • All was in a high state of excitement as Andy, the discoverer and Den his dive buddy, identified they had found lengths of steel, massive anchor chain links etc. Andy was pretty sure it had been uncovered by a recent storm and that he could find it again.
  • The Team consisted of assistant underwater Archaeologist Claudia, Andy and Tony.
  • Andy dived his rebreather so he could spend a couple of hours exploring and recording the wreck.
  • Andy led us unerringly to the wreck site. We found two pieces of steel and one large anchor chain link, where was the rest?...
  • ...It was an old mooring for the small snorkel trail buoys. Wreck ID job done.
  • The rest of the dive was excellent in terms of company, visibility, fish life and temperature – all divers were quite comfortable in their drysuits.
  • There were three divers using the new Syntactic covered absorbent canisters on their KISS Re-breathers during the recent Mikhail Lermontov trip. Impressive that we get an extra hour per fill.
  • Yarow and Matt, now both drysuit divers, found not one but two octopuses or octopodes (not octopi apparently).

  • Happy Birthday to: Wendy, Lesley, Peter, Johanna, Madi, Pattama, David, Caleb, Lauren, Bede, Todd, Alesia, Bridget, Matt, Anna, Andrea and Steve.
