UN International Days for November

Nov. 5th -  World Tsunami Awareness Day
Tsunamis are rare. But they can be extremely deadly. In the past 100 years, more than 260,000 people have perished in 58 separate tsunamis. At an average of 4,600 deaths per disaster, the toll has surpassed any other natural hazard. Such a stark impact isn't inevitable, however. Early warning systems can save lives. Equally important is community and individual understanding about how and where to evacuate before a wave strikes. Tsunamis know no borders, making international cooperation key for deeper political and public understanding of risk reduction measures. As a result, the UN General Assembly has made 5 November into World Tsunami Awareness Day, with the first edition being held this year. Want to learn more? Click here

Nov. 10th - World Science Day for Peace and Development

Each year, World Science Day for Peace and Development offers an opportunity to demonstrate why science is relevant to people’s daily lives and to engage them in debates on related issues. In 2016, the celebration focuses on science centers and science museums to highlight their important contribution to science communication.

The ties between science, policy and society must be strengthened: research and development must be harnessed to help society solve critical problems such as access to energy, health care and food security. Science centers and museums are undergoing a profound evolution, from mere exhibition spaces to platforms that facilitate dialogue between the scientific community, policy makers and the society at large. They can also act as communication hubs on key issues and contribute to raising awareness, increasing engagement and encouraging participation of all citizens. For more information on events and resources click here!

Nov. 14th - World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006. The theme of World Diabetes Day 2016 is Eyes on Diabetes. The year’s activities and materials will focus on promoting the importance of screening to ensure early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and treatment to reduce the risk of serious complications. Nov. 20th - Universal Children's Day

This day marks when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, in 1959, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in 1989. The Convention, which is the most widely ratified international human rights treaty, sets out a number of children’s rights including the right to life, to health, to education and to play, as well as the right to family life, to be protected from violence, to not be discriminated, and to have their views heard.

On the basis of the Convention and joint effort by all the countries and regions, let us promote and celebrate children’s right on the Universal Children's Day, and continuously build up a living-friendly environment for children in the world through dialogues and actions.

Nov. 25th - International Day for the Elimination of
Violence Against Women

From November 25 through December 10, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence aim to raise public awareness and mobilizing people everywhere to bring about change. This year, the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign invites you to “Orange the world,” using the color designated by the UNiTE campaign to symbolize a brighter future without violence. Orange events are planned in more than 70 countries around the world ahead of and throughout the 16 days. Human Rights Panel at USF Sarasota/Manatee

On Oct 26, 2016, the Selby Auditorium at the University of South Florida – Sarasota/Manatee campus was packed with students, faculty, staff, NGOs and the public at large, everyone there to learn about “Gender Rights as Human Rights: Where are we in 2016?”

A diverse panel consisting of two attorneys, two professors and one student spoke on a variety of topics under the gender rights umbrella.  Topics included, the United Nations Association Tampa Bay Chapter’s Cities for the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) initiative, women in India, rural women in Africa, Arab feminism, men’s roles in women’s rights and local CEDAW efforts by the United Nations Women/USNC Gulf Coast Chapter.

UNA Tampa Bay was proud to present alongside such powerful and knowledgeable panelists and to be speaking in front of such an engaged and receptive crowd, relationships we hope to continue to cultivate for many years to come.
