PATA SUSTAINABILITY & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
At WTM London this year we ran 25 events over the three days. It was the 10th anniversary of World Responsible Tourism Day and there were two brief films for the opening. The first looked back over the 10 years and the second looking forward at the major challenges. The challenge of overtourism came up in many of the sessions. There are increasing concerns that in a significant number of destinations are facing environmental and socio-economic limitations upon growth. There will be several panels on these issues at WTM London in 2017.

Tourist arrivals boost for Oceania in September 2016
 
Oceania sub-region enjoyed solid year-on-year growth in September 2016. Australia is reporting an increase of 13.17 percent (647,200 visitors) while New Zealand witnessed an increase of 12.95 percent (245,089 visitors) in the same month. August IVAs for Australia and New Zealand showed lower year-on-year improvement of 10.19 percent and 9.02 percent, respectively.

Amadeus, UNWTO and the Ministry of Tourism of Kenya partner to foster job creation

Amadeus, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Ministry of Tourism of Kenya have signed an agreement to provide youth and women of underprivileged communities with access to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in travel and tourism.

The pilot programme, to be launched in Kenya before the end of 2017, will include training for local communities through Amadeus customers. The initiative is expected to be replicated in countries around the world. Read More.
