Proposed Traffic Orders
Last week’s Coventry Telegraph included the ‘Proposed Traffic Orders’ that we detailed in our 13th November update. Namely:
Double yellow lines on the corners of Benedictine Road/ the Hiron/ Carthusian Road
Double yellow lines on the corners of Lichfield Road/ Glover Street
Installation of ‘No Parking on the Footway’ of Humphrey Burton’s Road/Stoney Road/ Asthill Grove/ Orchard Crescent

This means that these restrictions will soon be implemented.

Whitley Common - Football Pitches
Residents inform us that a lot of rubbish is still being left after the Sunday football games. Roger contacted Ann Akerman, War Memorial Park and Coombe Country Park Manager, and received this response:

Dear Councillor Bailey – I am disappointed to hear this as I spoke formally to the League Secretaries about this at our meeting on 2nd November and they were very annoyed with the clubs and were going to speak to them and fine them or ban them. I have written to the league secretaries this morning and asked them to investigate this weekend and I will respond to you further when I hear back from them. They do take this very seriously.

I have also asked for some targeted monitoring and on the spot fines from our litter enforcement team and I will follow this up and see what support they can offer us.

New Tiverton School Update
From the "New Tiverton Delivery Team" for Coventry City Council which consists of Council Officers, the designers and also the builders:

Weekly update: Friday 25th November 2016

The pre-commencement planning conditions have been discharged.

The signage for the construction traffic was getting put up on Friday 25th November.

A letter drop was also to take place on Friday, neighbours will have further information about Farrans’ operations in Whitley.

The Clerks of works have taken photographs of the existing condition of the estate’s roads and pavements.  This will form part of a dilapidations report.

On the site itself, the garden area of the former caretaker’s property is in the process of being cleared.

Freeview TV Signal Lost in Benedictine Road Area
A few days ago, several homes in the area, especially around Benedictine Road, lost their Freeview signal. Local resident David explained to us that he’d rung 0808 13 13 800 as directed. Someone come out to check the problem and a new aerial was installed for him free of charge. It seems that there was interference from nearby, possibly a mast.

Upon investigating Pauline found this:
Digital TV and 4G mobile services both use parts of the radio spectrum – that is bands of frequencies – to send signals. The 800 MHz frequencies used by some 4G services are next to frequencies used for Freeview. There’s a small chance this can cause interference to Freeview. The company ‘At800’ identify homes at risk of experiencing interference and send a postcard letting people know they can help.
Satellite and cable services will not be affected. Read more

Potholes in Abbey Road / Burnham Road Jetty
The entry between Abbey Road & Burnham Road is used by the refuse truck each week to empty the bins. Like the majority of back entries it is owned by the residents. Its condition has deteriorated so much that it has now become a safety issue for the refuse truck.

Last week Roger, his fellow councillor, several council employees, plus Lindsey & Doug from the local residents association met to discuss the longstanding issue with the entry. A refuse truck was driven along the back access to demonstrate the issues the council has with the badly worn out track, whilst trying to collect the rubbish. A good discussion took place between all assembled and a plan will hopefully be formulated within the next 2 to 3 weeks to find a solution.

Flytipping Leaf Lane/ Festival Island
Hazel, a local neighbourhood watch coordinator, contacted the Streetscene team by means of their website to report flytipping on Leaf Lane near to the Festival Island. She was informed that the work had been carried out but was most dissatisfied to discover that over half the rubbish was still in situ.

Roger has now been involved with the situation and Streetscene assure us that the mess will be cleared up.

Upcoming Works or Road Closures in our Area

Trial of Suspension of Bus Lanes

They will also be checking bus times to see whether the changes have an impact on journey times. One lane in the plan is - London Road outbound St James Lane. Read more

Christmas Fairs
Roger and Pauline have attended local Christmas fairs in the last few days.

St James Church on Abbey Road gave the opportunity to win many prizes whilst raising money for the church. Pork and sausage batches were also on sale. The event was well supported.

Saturday's visit to Christ Church, just off the Daventry Road, saw a good crowd of people in attendance. Again there was a large variety of stalls. This time bacon batches were on the menu for those who were hungry.

Changes to Local Policing
From Sergeant Antony Ashton:
Historically Neighbourhood Policing has very much been a department which would look to intervene into everything regardless. With the increased geography and decrease to staffing this ethos will have to be much tighter and controlled. WMP has now laid down very clear guidelines of how I am to deliver neighbourhood policing locally. They are

For the last 4 years I have been the Local Policing Sergeant for Binley and Willenhall Ward with responsibility for local Policing in this area. As part of WMP 2020 I will maintain this function covering Binley and Willenhall. Additionally I will inherit Cheylesmore Ward which previously had its own supervisor and Policing team allocated to it. This change will take effect from Monday 28th November. Despite the increase to the Geography I will cover, staffing available to me will be decreasing from that which previously covered purely Binley and Willenhall Ward. All of the staff from Cheylesmore Policing Team has been re-deployed to other functions.

City of Culture 2021
Last week, Roger and Pauline attended the Birmingham launch of the Coventry City of Culture Bid, at the Birmingham Hippodrome. The weather outside was terrible, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm inside. Coventry showcased a variety of acts including Irish Dancing and music. There were presentations from several keynote speakers, including David Burbridge who is helping to lead the Coventry bid, to others like Martin Reeves of Coventry City Council and Paul Kehoe the Chief Executive of Birmingham International Airport and President of Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.

It was explained how important the bid was for the whole region as everyone would benefit if Coventry won. Everybody came away with excitement and hope in regards to the Bid.

Sentinel Event - 'Working Without Fear'
Sentinel is a West Midlands Police initiative which aims to raise awareness of hidden crimes in order to better gather intelligence, support victims and tackle perpetrators.
In England and Wales domestic abuse costs £1.9 billion a year in lost economic output. This is due to decreased productivity, administration difficulties from unplanned time off, lost wages and sick pay. Domestic abuse can impact negatively on an employee’s health and wellbeing. It can impact on staff morale as well as organisational image and reputation.

On Thursday 1st December 2016 9am to 3pm, at Tally Ho, Pershore Road, Birmingham, B5 7RN, West Midlands Police will be hosting a conference to raise awareness of vulnerabilities within the work place.

This conference will help you spot the signs of domestic abuse, stalking and harassment and unwanted sexual contact within the work place and will equip you with the knowledge on how you can best support victims and know your legal obligations.

‘Online Market Places’ Survey
From Ed Hodson | Research & Campaigns Co-ordinator, Citizens Advice Coventry, 024 7625 2025, ehodson@coventrycab.org.uk

I am conducting national research on the experiences of people – particularly those with ‘disabilities’ (defined broadly) – when they use ‘online market places’, ie when they buy stuff on the internet from sites like Amazon and Gumtree (where the seller is not the same entity as the digital platform).

I believe ‘disabled’ people have much to gain in terms of social and financial inclusion by being able to use such sites effectively. But I think, like non-disabled people, only some do. I want to find what issues people have, what key messages we can identify to help these people and how best these messages can be communicated. The surveys below are open to anyone, able-bodied or not, but I will be able to extract data from them on the experiences of disabled people in particular.

OMP survey - Frequent Users for anyone who uses these websites regularly.
OMP survey - Infrequent users for those who use them rarely or never. The more responses we get the better. The more responses we get from disabled people better still.

Please note we have a paper version of the ‘infrequent users’ survey if required.

Thanks in advance for your help on this. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

Planning For Difficulties and Emergencies
It can be very worrying for carers and families about what will happen if you become ill or go into hospital or how to get help if the needs of the person you care for change suddenly. We would encourage you to think about the types of issues or problems that might arise and create an emergency plan to help deal with these difficult times.
