CECAN :: transforming the practice of policy evaluation in the Nexus to make it fit for a complex world
Sustainability in Turbulent Times - 16th March 2017 - Central London

These are turbulent times in which to advance sustainable development. Join 350 professionals from academia, policy, business and civil society to explore how research, policy and business can meet these global challenges.

With a focus on the food-water-energy nexus, this one-day conference will bring together researchers, policy makers, business and civil society leaders to take stock and consider ways ahead.

Drawing on the activities, networks and findings of three flagship ESRC programmes: The Nexus Network; The Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP), and The Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus (CECAN), the conference will debate what interdisciplinary research can contribute to the future sustainability of a post-Brexit Britain and an uncertain world.

New Fellowship Opportunity!

"Evaluating Complex Motives for Nature Conservation in a Growing Economy: Applications to Defra’s RDPE and Agri-Environment Case Studies"

This £10k Fellowship will support the work of CECAN in evaluating the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) and will address the idea that the development and conservation policies associated with such programmes must take into account a wide range of stakeholders’ values and concerns if they are to be successful.

The Fellow will collaborate with CECAN researchers working on RDPE and related Agri-Environment case studies to develop a framework capable of capturing, analyzing and resolving the complexity associated with this type of large-scale and multi-stakeholder programme.

23rd February 2017 "Addressing Complexity in Nexus Issues: A Case-Based Approach to Evaluation Research" - Professor Brian Castellani.

Drawing upon two recent studies – one on health trajectories and the other on grid reliability – Brian will demonstrate how evaluation researchers can use case-based complexity to more effectively model nexus issues across time/space.

3rd April 2017 "Dynamic Pattern Synthesis (DPS) :  A mixed method for exploring longitudinal patterns in social science data" - Professor Phil Haynes.

Dynamic Pattern Synthesis (DPS) is a new mixed method designed by Philip Haynes that seeks to maximise the advantages of Cluster Analysis and Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to search for dynamic patterns in data.
