Blaenavon World Heritage Centre and Library
Join us at the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre & Library for Summer Sundays this August for the following activities:
5th August: Celynen Collieries Silver Band play in the grounds of the Heritage Centre 2pm-4pm. Free Entry.
12th August: Teddy Bears Picnic with Mad Mel’s Disco. Bring your favourite teddy.  Entertainment, Face painting and activities and fun games with Mad Mel.  Best dressed teddy wins a prize. 2pm - 4pm.  £1 to register your bear for the competition.
19th August: Hear Oakdale Silver Band playing in the Heritage Centre grounds 2pm-4pm.  Free Entry. Visit: www.visitblaenavon.co.uk

Recycling Crafts & Bush Craft
Wed 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th August. Summer Recycling Crafts with the Council’s Recycling Team. Make compost heads using the compost we get from the recycling of garden waste, bird feeders and bird houses from old bottles. Free Entry.
Tues 14th, Thurs 16th & Fri 17th August. Bush Craft Sessions 10am - 12pm and 1pm - 3pm. Learn shelter building, camouflage and campfire lighting. Suitable for ages 7+.  Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free Entry but pre booking required. Tel: 01495 742333.

Blaenavon Library Activities
Story and craft sessions every Thursday @ 2.30pm starting 26th July and last session 30th August 2018. (5 - 10yrs)
Scarecrow making drop in sessions every Friday afternoon in August 2pm – 3.30pm. (5yrs +)
We will be using recycled materials and the children may enter their finished scarecrow into the Blaenavon and District Horticultural Society’s ‘Annual Flower and Vegetable Show’ in September
We hope to encourage children into the wonderful world of horticulture, think about the environment and waste and how it affects the planet.  These sessions are free and booking is advised. Telephone: 01495 742333

Summer Reading Challenge 2018
Mischief Makers, the Summer Reading Challenge 2018!
The aim of the challenge is for children to read 6 library books of their choice over the summer and into mid-September. As long as they are borrowed from the library, all types of books count.
Mischief Makers celebrates the 80th anniversary of the much-loved comic, 'Beano'. Children will explore a map of Beanotown to find the mysterious buried treasure and become ultimate mischief makers! 
Children receive a medal, certificate and entry to a prize draw if they complete the Challenge.
You can sign your children up for Mischief Makers and pick up their FREE map of Beanotown at Blaenavon World Heritage Centre and Library from Saturday 14th July.

Blaenavon World Heritage Environmental Group

"Coety Mountain" guided walk. Saturday 25th Aug at 10:00am.
Starting at the World Heritage Centre, a strenuous walk of about 10 km (6 miles).
After following the line of the restored Blaenavon Railway to the Whistle pub (alternative start point: SO229102) we  will climb Coety Mountain, eventually descending along old mine railway tracks skirting Mynydd Farteg Fach, returning to the start point via the Sustrans cycle track.
Please wear appropriate footwear and be prepared in case of wet weather.

Return of the successful World War Two themed event centred on Blaenavon Ironworks
Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th August 2018 – 10am – 4pm – Free admission 
Enjoy living history displays, weapon displays and music, painting a vivid picture of life during this troubled time.

There will be a chance to listen to real stories of life on the home front told by the firesides of Stack Square. More information 

Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway Festival of Classic Transport

Join the railway for a festival of classic transport with many vehicles on display and the chance to travel behind our classic steam and diesel loco's in 1950's Mk1 carriages.

Community News

Blaenavon Workmen's Hall hosts Enterprise Troopers competition 
Children from Garnteg Primary School are through to the next round of a national competition which aims to find and nurture the most promising young business talent in Wales.
Children from 28 schools across South Wales, including Garnteg Primary and Blaenavon Heritage VC Primary, took part in the two day regional finals hosted at the Blaenavon Workingmen’s Hall.
National final will be held at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
