A Letter from Our Board of Directors

As we turn from the latter days of summer and we enter a new fiscal year at Cathedral Park Performing Arts Collective (CPPAC), we would like to share some thoughts about the past year and the year to come with our community.

Since the incorporation of CPPAC as a non-profit organization, the Board of Directors has been working to build a positive culture that permeates throughout the organization. From teachers to students, volunteers to directors, we aim to cultivate a climate that is accepting, respectful, mindful, and maintains the dignity of each and every individual. The following highlights a few significant steps we've taken this past year related to this work.

Teachers

The Board approved a teacher bonus in June 2018. On account of CPPAC's fiscal responsibility, we had the opportunity to thank all of our teachers for the vital work they do and give them something concrete to demonstrate how much they mean to the organization and St. Johns community.  We sincerely appreciate our teachers and understand the value of consistency for our students.

Volunteers

CPPAC hosted our second annual celebration to thank our growing volunteer base for devoting their time and energy to contribute to this year's success. In particular, their work on the Roots-n-Harmony Annual Benefit Show was professional, selfless, and admirable. It's not surprising we exceeded our goal and raised over $6,000. These dedicated individuals attended monthly planning meetings, giving up their Saturday mornings from November 2017 until the day of the event on May 5, 2018.

Summer Musical Theatre

Our Summer Musical Theatre Workshop continues to introduce progressive ideas related to the holistic health of young performers. Between the vocal warm-ups and scene work, Workshop Directors incorporate mindfulness activities to the daily schedule. One example is something we call "Floor Time". While we have worked on breathing and self-soothing techniques in the past, this year we asked students to lay on the ground in a comfortable position and took them through positive self-talk, visualization exercises, and a series of focused breathing activities. Students were hungry for downtime, permission to stop and think about how they feel, and get more intimate with their own thoughts. Afterwards, students transitioned with calm energy, eager to return with a renewed sense of attention and purpose.

Deepening Intergenerational Roots

The Intergenerational Program just wrapped up its first of two fundraising campaigns on Saturday, September 1. Thanks to the benevolence of our wider community, CPPAC raised over $4,000 in just a few weeks time. Fundraising campaigns are vital to the Intergenerational Program as it is a free program for participants. As the program has grown, we have learned much about intergenerational equity and best practices in the elder care. There is extensive research on the benefits of intergenerational programs and we will continue to be informed by issues affecting everyone in our community.

Director Retreat

Recently, the CPPAC Board of Directors held a retreat to outline goals and initiatives that will support the sustainable growth of CPPAC in the 18/19 season. Here are some of the highlights of our retreat:
  • We are planning to launch a sponsorship campaign in the coming months. The campaign will help us create partnerships with corporations, small businesses, and individuals to provide more consistent and stable funding sources. If you have any leads, we welcome your input.
  • We are actively seeking new board members to serve the CPPAC community and welcome qualified candidates within our dynamic St. Johns community to apply. Interviews will begin this month.
  • After years of planning and strategizing, CPPAC is partnering with Roosevelt HS to begin a FREE choir program for high school students. We are extremely excited to be part of Roosevelt Singers and see the program grow. The impact of a collective voice is greater than the sum of its parts.
The Board of Directors is looking forward to another year of sustainable growth and engaging our beloved community in the wonders of the performing arts.

Thank you for being part of the collective.

IMAGINE: A Night to Remember

Cathedral Park Performing Arts Collective was thrilled to be invited to perform at Bridge Meadows' 13th annual gala, "IMAGINE," on September 20. Singers from the St. Johns Women's Choir joined with Bridge Meadows residents and CPPAC teachers and musicians to perform two special songs for an audience of nearly 400 guests. As community partners and as fellow advocates for intergenerational learning, living, and connectivity, we could not have been prouder to be part of this special night.

A message from Bridge Meadows:

"What an incredible evening at our IMAGINE Gala! We are incredibly grateful for all who attended, sponsored and supported this year's event! The funds raised last night will allow us to expand to more communities and ensure that children who have experienced foster care will have loving forever families, parents will have resources, and elders will live with meaning and purpose. On behalf of the Bridge Meadows Board of Directors, staff, and community members, thank you!"

Thank You for Deepening Intergenerational Roots!

A heartfelt THANK YOU to all our donors and supporters of the Intergenerational Program at Cathedral Park Performing Arts Collective. A total of $4,658 was raised toward our $5,000 goal, including donations received on and off of Facebook -AND- monthly donations from our new monthly giving circle. We are over the moon to be able to continue to engage our North Portland community through intergenerational learning and intergenerational connectivity this year.

Below are photos of our Summer Garden Party, during which we celebrated the end of summer and the culmination of our Deepening Intergenerational Roots summer giving campaign. Enjoy!
