NOVEMBER SPOKE

Efrat Livny and Mary Michal

As gardens are brought to their final rest and the bare branches silhouette against the dwindling daylight, the calls of migrating loons and trumpeter swans tug at our hearts. Fall is a time of letting go. At the beginning of November as All Souls and All Saints Day are traditionally celebrated, we pause to remember those who have departed.

In Mexico and other Hispanic cultures  the multiple day celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a creative and vibrant celebration of remembrance in action.  Altars are created  with  the photos, special belongings and favorite foods and beverages of the deceased.  Flowers adorn homes and streets. Families process to the cemeteries where food and ceremony are shared.  It is a time of deep connection between loved ones, dead and alive.

Threshold will, again this year, be holding a celebration inspired by these rich traditions (see below). We know that many in our community are unable to return to their countries to celebrate with family and friends and visit their cemeteries. This tugs deeply at our hearts. As we take time to share our stories and our food to honor our own, we honor  the rich culture and traditions that our Hispanic neighbors bring to our community.  We offer them our care and support at this time of great distress.

MEET OUR COWORKERS: Holly Henschen
Writer, Reporter, Editor

A few months ago, I quit my soul-sucking day job to pursue my dreams --- a fun duo of writing/editing and body/energy work.

For too long of a time, I worried that my passions of communicating and helping others find balance in their lives through healing weren’t compatible. I often fretted, Will people take my writing seriously if I’m practicing what some consider ‘woo-woo’ modalities? Eventually, my authentic self won out. I stopped caring so much because these practices are true and real for me, so they can co-exist for others as well. My practicing them makes then compatible.

So, I write for local publications, including the Isthmus, Tone Madison and the Wisconsin State Journal. I love editing books for independent authors. I’m excited by helping non-profits tell their stories through their websites, newsletters and social media. I’ve had bylines in the Wall Street Journal and US News & World Report. Check out my website si vous plait.

I’m passionate about helping people, often those with chronic stress and health issues, as well as trauma, find health in their lives. Mostly because I’ve done this on my own and I know how confusing and energy-depleting it can be. I’m so thrilled to be learning and practicing biodynamic craniosacral therapy, a modality that has helped me immensely, in addition to a reiki practice of 8 years.

I’m grateful to Threshold, which for me has been a place of community. I get so much energy from the good people there as we cross-pollinate ideas for personal growth and opportunity. With the darker months ahead, I look forward to continuing my work in this bright, open space.
