Over 2500 responses to our 2018 Breed Health Survey

We had over 2500 responses to our Breed Survey which closed on 30th November. Thank you to everyone who has participated. We will be working on the analysis and reports over the coming months.

In the meantime, you can find an initial summary of the responses in a presentation, here.

The survey ran from 1/9/18 to 30/11/18.

The results presented here are from the raw data. No cleaning has been done on the data.

These results are simply presented to show the range of results we have received.

A new peer-reviewed paper was published last month showing further analysis of our 2015 DachsLife Survey. The survey shows the increased risk of Back Disease (IVDD) in Dachshunds that have been spayed or castrated.

Results from this retrospective study suggest that gonadectomy, especially if performed before 12 months old, increases risk of IVDH in this breed. Decisions regarding neutering should be made on an individual basis, taking a range of pros and cons into account. Considering the high prevalence, morbidity and mortality of IVDH in dachshunds, increased IVDH risk associated with neutering is a key factor to consider in deciding whether and when to neuter.

Latest Lafora Screening results

We are grateful to Mandy Dance for providing an analysis of the latest Mini Wire Lafora Registration statistics (from the Autumn 2018 Breed Records Supplement).

68 litters registered producing 250 puppies in the Autumn Quarter. 5 litters producing 17 puppies are unsafe for Lafora. Either both parents are untested or, in two cases, a carrier bitch has been put to an untested dog.

The overall trend is shown in the chart below.

40 litters producing 150 puppies are clear from Lafora and PRA.

22 litters producing 82 pups are “safe” but not necessarily clear as one parent is clear whilst the other is either not tested or a carrier. The trend is not to test bitches, it seems, although two untested makes were used on clear bitches.

Dachshund Breed Preservation Strategies
This Facebook Group has been set up for people to discuss strategies to secure the genetic diversity of the Dachshund breed. Members will also discuss the tools that we have at our disposal, such as x-ray testing for IVDD, genetic testing for health, colour, traits and genetic diversity, veterinary evaluations of eyes and any other tool that we can use.
Attention all B and C List Judges
Lloyd Cross, Breed Education Coordinator (BEC) for Dachshunds asks all those people who are currently on a Breed Council B or C judging list to get in touch as he needs to send you information to clarify what you need to do to move from the current judging system to the new JCF.

Dilute colour Dachshunds (Blue & Isabella) - know the health risks

In the last year there has been a significant increase in the number of dilute coloured dogs being sold in the UK. The majority are being bred by French Bulldog and English Bulldog extreme-colour breeders, many using dogs imported from the U.S.A. or Eastern Europe, presumably as the market for both has passed the peak and they see an opportunity to make significant money from 'rare' or 'coloured' dachshunds.

The blue colour is a dilute of the black and tan; Isabella (also known as lilac in other breeds) is the dilute of the chocolate colour. The gene that causes the dilute colours can also cause an issue in some dogs called colour dilution alopecia (CDA), where the hair shaft is thin and weak, meaning it can drop out of the follicle and cause baldness. Because the coat is thinner than normal, the skin can also be more susceptible to infection and sunburn, which in turn may cause cancer.
