A memorable mid-month ahead, with Valentine's, an eclipse, and Lunar New Year all in a row!

The partial solar eclipse February 15 is a great time to emphasize confidence and boldness in new ideas and new beginnings, improvements in home and career, love of self and others, and awakening to important intuitions.

There will be no full moon in the month of February this year, which adds to the dark feeling of renewal. And with the Aquarius moon, we have a time of breaking away and freeing ourselves of old habits and obstacles. Take comfort in knowing that this eclipse will be a time of tenderness, hope, and a gentle, loving vibration.

The perfect time for some Hoodoo News! :)

Many blessings,

Deacon Millett

New Year, New You

(Xīn de yī nián, xīn de nǐ) “New Year, new you.”

As the New Moon approaches, so does the Lunar New Year (an eclipse this year to boot!).  2018 will be celebrated as the Year of the Earth Dog throughout China and many Asian countries. For those born in the Year of the Dog, this coming year will be a time for clearing out obstacles and removing anxiety, but everyone is encouraged to participate.

To start the year off right, tradition gives us highly symbolic acts to make the very best of this time of renewal. Though these traditions vary widely, some of the most universal include lighting firecrackers, visiting temples, honoring ancestors, reuniting with family, giving children red envelopes filled with money, and wearing red, gold and other bright colors!

One of my favorite traditions is eating from the whole fish, with head and tail remaining, as everything has a beginning, middle and end. Do not flip the fish over on its back to get to all of the meat, however, as this symbolizes a capsizing boat! Don’t worry about eating the whole fish either, as it is important to leave some leftovers to ensure plenty of abundance in the year ahead.

Similarly, it is considered good luck to remove all debts, pay all bills and start the year fresh. Conversely, it is thought to be bad luck to clean house as one may “sweep away” the good fortune that is their right. It is also unwise to wash one’s hair, cut it, or indeed, to use sharp instruments at all. As always, kindness is key. Never make a child cry over the New Year holiday!

The traditional time of celebration ends with a lighting of lanterns to welcome the coming Spring. In most cases, candles will also serve that purpose. Choose your vigils wisely and celebrate the good health and prosperity that is due to you in the coming year.

Recipes for Love's Passion and Long Journeys

This week's special occasions bring to mind these tasty treats!

VALENTINE PEAR SALAD

Hoodoo Psychic Cat Yronwode shares this recipe in the book "Hoodoo Food":

  • 1 can Bartlett pear halves in juice (love and fertility)
  • 1/4 cup Cinnamon Red Hots candies, to taste (fiery love)
  • Red food colouring (love and passion)

Pour pear liquid into a small saucepan and add Red Hots. Simmer until candies dissolve, stirring to prevent scorching, then remove from heat. Stir in a drop of food colouring, then add pears, gently, so as not to break them. Spoon sauce over pears repeatedly. When cool, place in refrigerator. Serve on lettuce as a salad or on vanilla ice cream. Valentine pears are a form of Red Fast Luck.

PANCHA-AMRITA

Hoodoo Psychic Deacon Millett shares this recipe in the book "Hoodoo Honey and Sugar Spells":

This Hindu prescription is said to have purifying virtues. Described in "The Master Key to Occult Secrets" by Henri Gamache, it is drunk before undertaking any big deal, engaging in money matters, or setting out on any long or dangerous journey. The liquid is prepared as follows:

  • 1 quart milk
  • 1/4 lb. butter
  • 1/4 lb. sugar
  • 1/2 lb. honey

The butter is melted and mixed thoroughly with the sugar. The honey is mixed with the milk. Then the two are mixed together.

Happy Birthday, Valentine!
