CHIME RE-OPENS IT'S DOORS
TO THE COMMUNITY!

The grand re-opening of Chime took place on March 17th 2018. The recreation of Chime required us to transform an empty warehouse into a fully fit-for purpose Community Music Centre. In just 12 months we managed to turn our vision into a reality, with the help of donors, volunteers and musicians who gave their time and energy. We were able to reach out to the wider community by offering live music workshops, demonstrations, open jam sessions and even a performance or three from the likes of Chris Hunt, Chloe Lorentzen and The Beat Orchestra.

Artists, Princess Marshall and Stuart Payn were here representing BATTLE LINES. Also, Andy Little and Luke Payn put up some of their amazing art. We have a fair amount of wall space so we think it makes sense to
promote local artists. Virtual Reality specialist, Lee Mason was also about, to offer a live VR workshop.

It was amazing to further promote Community Music in the city, the centre is already being utilised to it's full potential with increased 1-2-1 tuition and group workshops.
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to the financial support and funding we received from: Perkins Engines, ASDA, The Olive and Jesse Palmer Fund, Peterborough Learning Disability Partnership, Santander, Persimmon Homes, Tesco Groundwork and of course Cambridgeshire Community Foundation.  We could not have made this possible without your support.

I'M MAKING MUSIC AT CHIME

We had the amazing opportunity to ask Quinn some questions about her music. She is a wonderful artist who deserves lots of recognition so please check out her songs.

.......

Why do you enjoy recording and writing music?

I enjoy recording music because I get to voice my feelings and feel it within me. If I'm recording a sad song, I feel sad, if I'm recording a love song I feel loved up.

What kind of genre of music do you write?

I do new stuff, not old stuff. I don't know what you would class it because it's different music in one CD, I've done three songs and they're all different in their own ways. One of them I wanted to be country music but it didn't really turn out that way, it's sort of country. The chords were but the singing was kind of like love, it's called deep friendship. I talk about my friendship with my husband and how it goes.

How long have you been recording?

I started in January, so about 6 months or so.

.......

Quinn is currently in the process of writing and recording her fourth song so keep an eye out for new material-coming soon.

LAVALAMP LIGHTERS UPDATE

The Lava lamp lighters are a band who rehearse at Chime and were founded in 2011. We had the opportunity to have an interview with some of the members. In the interview, we talked about the individual stories of the band members and why they decided to join the Lava lamp lighters.
Natasha - took music technology at college and loved music so much that after college she discovered the lava lamp lighters. With the help of carers, her mum and music teachers, she made the decision to play the bongos for the band. She has been a member for 2 years and is also a DJ and songwriter. She is currently working on a new song at the moment.

Jeremy - is a singer/songwriter as well as bassist. Jeremy has been in the band for 5 to 6 years and being in a band was one of his hopes and dreams. Chime and Beat This has helped Jeremy to achieve his dream and he's made many new friends through the Lava lamp lighters.

Shan - rehearses with the band when she has nothing to do. She plays her instruments with one hand and she began coming to the band just a few months ago. She enjoys coming and is interested in learning keyboard.

Emily - plays the drums for the band. She likes the drums and using the kit to make a loud noise.

Chris (aka SHADOW) - is the lead singer for the band. He has been attending for around 3 years. He started out on the drums and didn't realise he could sing until it was suggested to him. He now writes lyrics for songs and has released a solo album called Trials. He is in the process of working on a second album and he is hoping to learn the guitar in the future.

Martin - plays the keyboard and electric guitar and is also interested in songwriting. He started going to the band because the lighters suggested it to him and he now plays keys for the band.

Simon - started off helping the band then took over. He has been a member from the beginning and remembers a guy called David Hills being interested in starting a band. Hills worked at the lava lamp night club which is a night club for adults with different learning disabilities. It gives them the opportunity to party and get drunk like the rest of us. David was talking to Benny about his idea for a band and they managed to create the lava lamp lighters together.
The band are an amazing bunch and they would really appreciate it if you checked out their songs.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NENE PARK TRUST!

Nene park invited beat this to help celebrate their 40th anniversary

We were lucky enough to be asked by The Nene Park Trust to be involved in the the Ferry Meadows Cultural Festival.  We had a fantastic couple of days on the field, making some great music.  One of the aims of the weekend was for us to encourage the participants to record the sounds of Ferry Meadows e.g: the birds and wildlife, wind in the trees, and the little train.  We then used the Makey Makey and other music tech to create a piece of music.

As part of the festival the Beat orchestra performed. "we had a fantastic time performing our original tracks, and having members of the audience join us, on stage, was amazing."-lee ashton (creative producer of the beat orchestra)
As always they put on an amazing show, the crowd were left wanting more!

The Beat Orchestra are a band who are interested in trying out new ideas and are very open to interpretations. They like to play reggae, afrikaans, and all sorts of different styles and they
often mash genres together to create sub-genres such as blues/punk and lots of other wacky styles of music.
If you are interested in joining this incredible band of young musicians please

OUR WORK EXPERIENCE
AT BEAT THIS IZZY & JACOB

As a part of my work experience, I have taken a 2 week job at Beat This. I chose Beat This because I have a very strong passion for music and would like to pursue it as a future career. I am a guitarist and I've been playing for almost 10 years, it has been a huge part of my life and I would love to be able to make a living out of it. I am interested in recording and performing original songs and covers. I have a very open mind when it comes to genres of music; I like to listen to and play a lot of different genres. I enjoy working with other musicians and feel that my time at Beat This will benefit me a lot.
Hi, i'm Jacob and like Izzy, i also took work experience at Beat This for 2 weeks. I've had a passion for music since i was young and so this motivated me to go to Beat This for my work experience. I have been playing guitar for around 3 to 4 years and i have also been playing piano for around a year. My goal is to, when i'm older, pursue a career in the music industry and everyone at Beat This has really shown me a different perspective of music and what the industry of music has to offer.
