Greetings everyone,
I have just returned from about 4 weeks in Canada having left the following day after the convention.
It was lovely weather there with early summer temperatures in the rockies..landscape paradise!
Coming back to Melbourne to mid-winter might seem to many a bit of a shock… However, as many of you will know, I love the colder temperatures and I find Melbourne’s winter quite lovely!
Misty mornings, low angled sunlight, later dawns for later risings and winter clouds make its a landscape photographers dream.
May you all capture some wonderful images in the next month or so, as winter does offer many different photographic delights. Its a quiet season and on wet or dull days we can sit in our comfortable homes and catch up on our processing!

Mark Davy
Mark Davy has been with Knox Photographic Club for 15 years, Ringwood Black and White Photography Club for 5 years and Phillip Island Camera Club for 10 years too. During that time he produced and delivered a 6 week introduction to photography course for Phillip Island Camera Club (PICC) as well as a giving a portraiture workshop. He has assisted with Knox (KPS) club’s beginners and Lightroom courses. For PICC he lectured on still life, on Colour Spaces, calibration of monitors, file systems, hyperfocal distance, live-view focussing and photographing to a client’s brief. He instructed PICC members on the use of computers, projectors and software.
Having completed a 2 day VAPS photo evaluation program at Frankston and another at Phillip Island and intra-club judging experiences, he has been elaborating on judges’ comments as part of his ongoing mentoring of individual members. He delivered community lectures for CWA, Fellowship group and Phillip Island Rotary Club. He wrote about filters for the KPS newsletter and an article for the Ballarat newspaper on a VAPS outing, providing accompanying photographs.
His contribution to club administration includes being on the KPS committee for 4 years, organising the KPS mentoring program for 2 years, being the EDI competition steward for 10 years for PICC, including delivering their monthly competition images to judges. He represented Phillip Island at a meeting to establish the Inter-Gippsland Annual Competition and exhibited in that competition. He hung the exhibition held at Coal Creek. He was part of the team that assembles and operates the audio system on club nights for PICC and designed and assembled the audio system, as well as researching, purchasing and installing the computer, projector and software for PICC.
He organised Masterclasses with Andrew Thomas at Ballarat for KPS, organised three-club workshops led by Paul Robinson on Architectural photography and portraiture at Coal Creek. He assisted with the Preparation of the VAPS Phillip Island Convention, and prepared the grant applications for two clubs.
He enters monthly competitions but exhibits more widely too. His photograph of Ballarat Station was chosen to represent Victoria in the Australian Competition. His work has been hung in PICCs exhibition at Inverloch, in the Artists of Phillip Island twice yearly exhibitions, the Annual Gippsland Interclub competition, the Ferny Creek Horticultural show, The Phillip Island Rotary Garden Show, the Cowes Medical Centre Photographic Display and the Melton Mowbray international competition. He photographed graduation nights and school events at the local primary school for their publicity and photographed items for Habitat for Humanity’s website.
He has contributed to local communities. He manned KPS’s information stall at the Knox Festival, photographed the Cape Patterson Aquathon for the local Surf Life Saving Club to document the event and support their fund-raising, doing so for three years, and Photographed the Bass Coast Community Players for publicity posters and programs for their theatre production. He photographed the National Vietnam Veterans Museum’s collection for insurance purposes. Mark organised weekends away to Ballarat and Clunes and provided advice and feedback to other camera clubs.
He participated in 18 weekend club outings, four 5 day outings, four masterclasses and helped KPS organise boot camps. He encourages other members to attend day trips, emphasising the opportunities for skill development and integrating into the club. On excursions he moves among participants assisting when needed or requested. He reports at club meetings on exhibitions and encourages members to attend. He contributed to the KPS 40 year anniversary book and to the Phillip Island calendar that was sold to stabilize the finances of the club. He provided the colour management for the printing of the calendar.
VAPS feels he is a worthy recipient of a Meritorious Service Award in thanks for his immense contribution to two clubs and their local communities.

|
Jeff McMillan
Jeff McMillan has been a member of the Stawell Camera Club for 27 years, joining soon after the club started. He is an important member of the small group of Stawell Camera Club members who have organised and presented basic photographic skills courses for beginning photographers from the local community. Very popular, these registrations quickly fill. Jeff is a skilled black and white worker and is able to share his expertise with club members as well as with people attending the courses. In 2018, Jeff ran two black and white workshops as part of the club’s 30th Anniversary celebrations. These were open to the public and were advertised in the local paper and on ABC radio. They were provided free of charge.
His images, both EDIs and Prints, are widely exhibited. As well as being entered in internal club competitions, some of his images are always selected for the VAPS interclub and the Wimmera Interclub Competitions. In the latter Jeff often gains awards for his images and has had one of his black and white prints selected as the best image of the competition. He always has a variety of images on display at the local Agricultural Show and has been very successful, winning a number of aggregates and also having one of this images selected as the best image of the whole show.
This year Jeff contributed nine prints for the club’s 30th Anniversary Exhibition and five digital projected images for the audio-visual presentation. One of his photos was selected by the Northern Grampians Shire for display as a large printed image on the walls of a walkway in Stawell.
The Stawell Camera Club organizes and runs the Annual Stawell Agricultural Show Photographic competition and Jeff McMillan is one of the stewards responsible for preparing the exhibition for judging. He then supervises the display on show day. This competition caters for five levels of photographers (Advanced: Open, Novice Secondary and Primary). There is often between 350 and 400 prints on display.
He has been a great contributor to the administration of the club. He became Secretary/Treasurer in 1993 and then Treasurer in 1994, a position that he has continued to hold until the present time. He is also a member of the executive planning committee and attends all meeting of this group. In 2017 John McMillan, John Tiddy and Lyn MacKenzie travelled to Nhill to run a basic photographic skills course in the Nhill district. This was to help the Nhill Club to attract new members. Jeff and John also visited Horsham to support the formation of a new photographic club in Horsham.
Jeff always attends club activities and enjoys chatting with and assisting new members. He is supportive of club projects and activities. During club outings, he is happy to assist newer members and encourage their efforts to capture a great image.
He has been one of the Stawell Camera Club members who has judged at the Donald Show photographic competition for the past 8 years and at the Murtoa Show. In addition, Jeff has helped to judge at the Moonambel Town Festival Photographic competition.
Stawell Camera Club has great pleasure in nominating Jeff McMillan for a 2018 VAPS Meritorious Service Award in recognition of the huge contribution he has made to the club and the Stawell community over many years. VAPS is delighted to present him with this award.

Jen Fawkes
Jen has been a member of Benalla Camera Club since 2007. During that time, she has been active in entering monthly competitions and has won Image of the Year and annual aggregate awards.
In 2016, she held a solo exhibition ‘Behind the Façade’ at the Gellibrand River Gallery. She has submitted entries in the Benalla Show for many years and has been a finalist in the Regional Photography Competition at the Melbourne Show.
Jen’s work has gained over 50 acceptances in national and international competitions and she has qualified for Licentiate in APS. This year she has applied for Associate in APS. She has submitted images for competitions with Wodonga Albury Camera Club and York Camera Club in the USA. In 2011, her work was displayed at the Benalla Art Gallery in an exhibition to celebrate 60 years of the Benalla Camera Club.
Jen has made an outstanding contribution to the administration of the Benalla Camera Club. She has been a member of the committee since 2010. She was Activities Coordinator in her first year and President from 2011 to 2014, and again in 2016.
She has represented Benalla Camera Club at VAPS meetings since 2012 and is a tireless advocate for rural clubs at state and national levels. She is a member of APS and the APJA, and is currently on the APJA Executive Committee. She commenced judging externally for rural camera clubs in 2016.
Jen has taught new techniques at club meetings, organised training courses and has undertaken one-on-one training with members and non-members on camera use and techniques, and on post processing software such as Photoshop and Lightroom.
Jen has organised the Benalla Camera Club’s photographic exhibitions that have been held in conjunction with the Bald Archy Prize Exhibition at Swanpool, a ‘Faces of Benalla’ exhibition at a store in Benalla, and a permanent display of members’ photographs at a local nursing home. She has obtained grants to develop club resources and has promoted the club through the local newspaper and on social media.
She has brought to her club boundless energy and a passion for welcoming, teaching and supporting new members and has developed a short course to teach newcomers the basic principles of photography. Her patience and knowledge as teacher, mentor and friend has assisted many new members to gain confidence and the skill to improve their photographic ability.
Her club wishes to honour her with the Meritorious Service award. VAPS confers it on her with thanks for her outstanding contribution to photography at both her club level and in rural Victoria.

Exhibitions and What's On

VIGEX Digital Salon 2018
The VIGEX 2nd International Digital Photographic Salon will be presented over two weekends,
7 & 8 July and 14 & 15 July, from 10am - 4pm,
Centenary Hall, 1-9 Cox Rd, Norlane, Victoria.
The exhibition opening will be at 1.30pm on Saturday 7th.
There will be six sections: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel and Differences in Society. This final section is a new category for images that reflect on human life in the modern world.
All acceptances will be screened in a continuously running slideshow
through the four days of the exhibition.
A selection of the exhibition images which includes all awards and all Australian acceptances will be shown in three evening presentations:

Friends of VIGEX Subscriptions 2018-19
Friends of VIGEX subscriptions are used to support each print salon and these funds are not allocated towards the more financially robust digital salons in the alternate years. This means that the next FoV subscriptions will cover the two-year period 2018-19 leading up to the VIGEX 20th Print Salon 2019.
All Friends are invited to renew their subscription now and any new Friends will be especially welcome. Portrait Group Master Classes at The Melbourne Camera Club
10 photographers, 2 professional models, make-up artists and 3 hours of photography in The Melbourne Camera Club studios. If you are into portrait shooting then this is for you.
With a maximum of 5 shooters per group you will not only get plenty of shooting time but plenty of help from our experienced instructors in all aspects of portrait photography (or we can stay out of your way if you prefer).
Our models will wear a variety of outfits, and there will be ample opportunity to learn some new lighting set ups.
Suitable for experienced and novice portrait shooters.
Cost is $90 for Melbourne Camera Club members, and $130 for non-members.
Numbers are restricted so you must book in advance.

Berwick Viewfinders cordially invite you to attend a special workshop by Yana Martens on Monday evening, 3 September.
The topic of the workshop is “Posing a Model - Giving Directions”, and Yana will teach the main posing principles, how to give clear instructions, how to use mirroring techniques, build rapport, and avoid common communication mistakes. The workshop will include various practical tasks and useful tips to help you feel comfortable working with people.
Yana has been modelling for over thirteen years, and this experience has given her insights on people’s behaviour in front of the camera and what is most effective when helping people to overcome their insecurities.
Please feel free to join us on Monday 3 September for Yana’s workshop. Berwick Viewfinders Camera Club has a new venue : the Senior Citizens Hall at 110 High Street, Berwick. There will be no charge to visitors for the workshop, but visitors are asked to contribute $3 per head to the cost of the venue.

Eastern Suburbs Photographic Society’s Exhibition at Box Hill Town.
ESPS currently has an exhibition of a selection of its members’ prints in the All Nations Gallery at Box Hill Town, 1022 Maroondah Highway, Box Hill.
The selection showcases the work of ESPS’s talented and creative members and includes landscapes, portraits, nature and creative; both colour and monotone.
Admission is free and the exhibition runs until 28th July, 2018.
It is accessible during business hours Monday to Friday and at the weekends.

VALE - Royce Horwood
It is with much sadness that we send this to let you know that our beloved club member Royce passed away very peacefully in early June. It is our understanding that he passed in his usual proud & dignified manner.
Special thanks to club member Nola Ford who has been a regular visitor for Royce since he became unwell. Nola spent a couple of hours with Royce before his passing.
We had a special presentation for Royce at our club meeting on Tuesday 19th June and urged all to come along and help us pay tribute to Royce. He loved the camera club and its members and was always willing to put his hand up to help in any way he could.

You do not need to be an active judge to be a member.
The prime objective of the Association is to help develop the evaluation and judging skills of members.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
