   SMART VILLAGES CAMPAIGN

Many rural areas in the Union suffer from structural problems such as lack of attractive employment opportunities, skill shortages, under-investment in connectivity, infrastructures and essential services, as well as youth drain.

Solving such issues aims, in particular, job creation and generational renewal, by bringing the Commission's jobs and growth to rural areas, promoting social inclusion, generational renewal and the development of ‘Smart Villages’ across the European countryside.

Following the discussions of the 4th Thematic Work Group, the Romanian Rural Network wants to identify initiatives and projects already taking place in Romania - through a campaign dedicated to actions that aim and can develop villages smartly (responsible and sustainable) with social, economic, human and resources benefits.

AGRIFISH COUNCIL OF 18 JUNE 2018

The Council had a first formal exchange of views on the Commission proposals to reform the Common Agricultural Policy after 2020. The proposals, presented on 1st June, outline a new delivery model for the CAP in which member states would have more flexibility to tailor make their decisions and adapt them to local circumstances.

Ministers welcomed various elements of the proposals but expressed concerns about the cuts proposed by the Commission to the CAP budget in general and rural development in particular, and were skeptical as to the capacity of the new CAP to deliver genuine simplification for national authorities and farmers.

During the debate ministers were also informed about a memorandum on the CAP budget in the context of the next MFF signed by several member states and about the decreasing availability of water for agriculture in Cyprus.
