Cheers to 35 Years!
June 1, 1985 | With a passion for landscape architecture and great design, Clark Condon Associates, Inc. was founded thirty-five years ago. Over the last three decades, Clark Condon has grown into a 27-person firm with new owners, leaders, designers, and an experienced group of professionals. We have been fortunate to work on a wide variety of projects both large and small throughout our region and beyond. We've had the opportunity to work with our amazing list of clients and design teams around the country to deliver outstanding and award-winning projects. As landscape architects, we have the unique opportunity to design outdoor spaces for people to use, enjoy, and experience nature. The carefully curated environments we design invite you to experience nature and the outdoors through education, immersion, and accessibility to open green space.

Now, more than ever, nature is a place of restorative rejuvenation and a way to connect beyond ourselves. We have spent the last 35 years creating great places for you to enjoy and will continue our legacy of great design. To all of those that we have worked with over the years, thank you for the opportunities, collaboration, and inspiration to go above and beyond. We are overwhelmingly thankful and look forward to furthering our mission to enjoy the art and science of creating meaningful outdoor environments with our community and clients at heart.

Downtown Houston
Downtown Transformation

Clark Condon is working with Brookfield Properties, Gensler, and the design team to redevelop Houston Center into a new, vibrant destination in the heart of downtown. This five-block complex was originally built in the early 1980s with the commuter employee in mind. Buildings at street level had little interaction with the exterior environment. Retail and commerce were implemented below grade in the tunnel system which negatively impacted the street grade activity.

This project, and many others nearby such as Discovery Green and Buffalo Bayou Park, have changed the fabric of downtown through the addition of greenspace and creating destinations for people. Creating a green corridor along McKinney Street allows for a comfortable connection between downtown and bayou corridors. This is achieved by designing a people-focused environment through active buildings, a vibrant usable streetscape and plaza. The design team approached this project with the mindset of creating a new neighborhood downtown.

A completely new arrival sequence sets the tone for the project and offers a seamless connection from the streetscape to the building. In addition to the arrival and “front door” aesthetics, the design team created amenitized spaces both indoors and outdoors to provide a unique space that offers benefits to the tenants and the public alike. For instance, a new central plaza features a digital water wall, flexible entertainment space, and an iconic spiral staircase that leads to landscaped terraces above. Roof deck terraces offer outdoor co-working spaces to foster collaboration and extend the traditional working environment into a natural setting. The changes at Houston Center focus on the pedestrian by creating a walkable and accessible environment that will entice people to venture outdoors.

Considering Houston’s climate and the downtown landscape, creating a safe and comfortable outdoor environment was a priority. It was critical to add shade trees for comfort and lighting for safety. These enhancements also extend usage times beyond normal working hours and into the evening making it more of a destination. To achieve these goals and improve the pedestrian realm, the project included taking away a lane of traffic. In doing so, we were able to plant trees along the street for increased shade, improve walking surfaces to address ADA access issues, and shorten the distance for pedestrians to cross the street.

The renovation and enhancements to Houston Center, through greenspace, infrastructure, and amenities, will change the way people experience downtown and inspire a new way of thinking about development in the area. Currently under construction, Houston Center will be completed at the end of 2020.
