HELLO FROM THE OFFICE
How to Defeat the Icky, Filthy, Creepy, Slimy Corona Monster!
by
Robert F DeFinis, Ed.D.
As we publish our May 2020 edition of The Bridge, we like most Australians are looking forward to life returning to normal after over three months of COVID-19 regulations and concerns restricting our lives in the interest of health and safety.  Our return to our everyday lives may take a while and, in fact, may introduce a new normal. During that time it is important to continue to work within recommended regulations and guidelines.

With that in mind, we are looking forward to operating our Books in Homes® Programs in Term 3. This is the first time we will be distributing our Programs during Term 3 since our establishment in Australia in 2001. The Term 3 Programs are, of course, our COVID-19 deferred Term 2 Programs. Community feedback tells us that the children are missing our books and are looking forward to seeing our Preview Packs arrive in the first week of term.

In helping children understand the Coronavirus better, we'd like to extend a giant thank you to Robert F DeFinis, who reached out to Books in Homes and has graciously shared his children's book How to Defeat the Icky, Filthy, Creepy, Slimy Corona Monster! with us. The author has graciously allowed Books in Homes to make his book available to children and families from our broad Books in Homes community. This short rhyming eBook is intended to help children (3-7) to learn the importance of washing their hands, covering their cough and sneeze, and practicing social distancing. We have promoted the book already on social media and now provide you with a link to the book’s YouTube video (above). If you haven't obtained the ebook already, you can download it here along with the Activity Book from the new Resources page of our website. Thanks, Robert, for your generosity.

This month we've been contemplating and expressing appreciation in-house to all our unnamed donors in the Books in Homes community who donate to our cause either on a regular or one-off basis. Each of these donors has made an enormous contribution to our program operation and today we want to honour your generosity and support.

Some of our donors prefer to focus on specific aspects of our campaigns, for example, helping us to send additional parcels of donated books and goodies far and wide over Australia via our Postage Fund (we have raised $403 towards our initial $2000 goal so we are nearly a quarter of the way there... great going!). Many donors choose to donate to our general Fundraising Appeal. Those wonderful donors have contributed $53,495 against our first target of $100,000. These funds are used to assist in getting more children and even more schools on our Programs, combining with other funds to make it possible for a greater number of children to receive our Books in Homes. In some cases, larger donations are able to be directed to the sponsorship of deserving schools on our Program. In recent years, sponsorships of smaller schools by individuals or groups of individuals has become quite popular. Other donors direct their support to specific geographical campaigns, such as the GIANTS Great Western Sydney Campaign, or the Rotary  District 9810 DG Family Project Books for Kids Campaign, where over 1,500 children will receive Books in Homes in Term 1, 2021. For your interest, this is how the donated funds can be spent: $6.54 buys a book, $1.80 pays for a book bag, and to receive the full Program package a $27.30 donation covers one child per term, or $81.90 covers one child per year. $984 will pay for a small school of 12 children for a year, and so on. All donations $2 and over are tax deductible. More information on our Fundraising Campaigns can be found at www.BooksinHomes.com.au. Thank you to all our Books in Homes donors! We couldn't be Books in Homes without you.

Location: Upper Hunter, NSW
Job: Medical Administration Trainee, On Board of Directors at Wanaruah Local Aboriginal Land Council
What part of your work most interests you?
Hearing others' life stories and perspectives and how that has influenced and shaped them into who they are today, and being able to help them in some way and at some point throughout their life journey.

How did you choose your career path?
I am currently working towards joining the Police Force. Throughout my life every job role I've ever aspired towards has always involved law enforcement and that's how I knew deep down it’s my passion.

Who has inspired you most in life? Why?
My mum has the biggest influence and is the primary role model in my life. Every day I see her push her boundaries and work hard to not only better the life of our family but the community. She has always instilled in me to not let my morals or integrity be compromised and stay true to who I am and I cherish that.

What did you most enjoy about school?
I enjoyed the academic challenges school presented and the opportunities I was given that were out of my comfort zone that ultimately taught me more about myself, my abilities and my limits.

What did you hate most about school?
I didn't hate anything about school.

What advice would you give your 10-year old self?
Don’t worry about if anyone else is criticising you because no one is watchingeveryone else is focused on their own journey.

What three children’s books were your favourites when you were at school?

  1. Tashi by Anna Fienberg, Barbara Fienberg and Kim Gamble.  (I never returned this book to the school library. Sorry mum and Mrs Wilson!)
  2. Pearlie in the Park by Wendy Harmer and Mike Zarb.
  3. Dork Diaries by Rachel Renée Russell.
What three things would you take to a desert island?
  1. Survival on a Desert island for Dummies
  2. Multi tool
  3. Picture of my family.
And just for fun, choose your preference below:

Jelly babies or jelly snakes? Neither.
