Bishop Richard's weekly message #16
Latest news
An exciting week lies ahead as we look forward to public worship re-starting from next week, providing physical distancing remains in place.  This is good news as we begin to see chinks of light but we must remain alert to the realities of living with the virus as demonstrated in Leicester, where people remain in lockdown.

As we bear with one another in this next stage, we will each need to make sense of all the guidance and supporting information required to make our churches safe for public worship and hold life events including weddings and funerals in our buildings. The detailed advice is published on the Church of England website and this very helpful flowchart, created by Southwell Diocese is a useful tool to help you work through it.

Social and racial injustice in Church

We continue our conversations exploring Christian perspective and responses to racial injustice and the Church
We continue to explore and learn more from those who have experienced the social injustice of racial inequality and how as Christians we can respond and make everybody welcome in all our Churches. We will be publishing further videos following the highly successful conversation between Revd Kina Robertshaw and former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Wiliams.

If you are keen to talk to us about this or learn more about a Christian response to racial injustice please do get in touch.

Guidance and Information

From 4th July, the Government has allowed resumption of public worship.  Read the latest advice on safely resuming public worship and advice on celebrating Holy Communion.

If you are not planning to open for public worship until after 4th July, please read the legal questions on conducting public worship and make local arrangements to ensure you have the necessary approval from your PCC.  Bishop Richard will shortly write to all clergy about how to proceed after September 2020 regarding permissions.

If you plan to invest in AV equipment in your Church building or are considering mixing online services and worship, we recommend reading this handy blog post from Bristol Diocese.  There is also some useful information on broadband and Wifi on the Parish Buying website

As our churches reopen for worship, many may wish to resume children's groups during Sunday Worship.  This is a more complex area where detailed guidance from the Church of England, refers to guidance from the Dept of Education.
We recognise that it will be necessary to include this in the risk assessment and make appropriate local decisions.  If you wish to speak to someone for further advice or support, please contact our Intergenerational Mission Team.

ACNY Resource Hub offers a range of videos, images and tools to support churches in promoting services and life events.  They have recently added some new features including:
  • a new tool which they are trialling to record services as an alternative to paper records (parliamentary legislation is being sought to make this legally approved)
  • Advice and information on how to set up donations online and resources to support churches looking to fundraise
  • Music resources including licence free hymns which can be used in services online

NHS72 Birthday Thankyou

Sunday 5 July marks the 72nd Birthday for the NHS.  Everybody across the country is being encouraged to come together to thank not only NHS staff but all key workers, good neighbours and all those helping others through the coronavirus pandemic
The two key moments during the weekend will be:
  • A minute’s silence on the evening of July 4 when people will be asked to light a candle in their window in remembrance of all who have died during this time
  • A moment of thanks and connection on July 5 when we take part in one last country-wide clap of thanks and then stay out to raise a glass or have a cup of tea with our neighbours

Training and Events

Inhabiting innovation Led by Ed Olsworth-Peter

An invitation from +Richard to a seminar for those in church leadership exploring what mission and ministry could look like beyond lockdown. Joined by members of the National Anglican Community of Pioneers who will share their experiences it will draw on pioneer principles as a foundation for innovation.
It will share insights from lockdown from the national pioneer community, explore how to develop a pioneering vocation within your tradition, how to inhabit your context drawing on pioneer principles as well as highlighting the spiritual disciplines that underpin this. There will be an ‘in conversation with..’ session which will directly follow the seminar as an opportunity for participants to ask questions and develop themes with pioneer practitioners in breakout rooms.
