Dog Fouling ~
We are committed to promoting responsible dog ownership and reducing the problems caused by dogs. Unfortunately there are still some dog owners who act irresponsibly and do not clean up after their dog.You can assist us by reporting offenders to Environmental Health by going online – this is the quickest and easiest way to inform us of issues. We can take action in relation to complaints about dog fouling if you know who the person is who is not cleaning up after their dog has fouled, or you know the approximate time (to within a couple of hours) the fouling occurs.
Even if you do not know any of the above, but your area is badly fouled, let us know and we will endeavour to undertake patrols and also clean up the worst affected areas.

  • You can help us by providing as much of the following information as possible:
  • Accurate location, is there a near by landmark, lamp column or house number?
  • Frequency and time, how regular and at what time does it occur?
  • Description of the dog, for example a male black labrador puppy.
  • Address and description of the person walking the dog

Do It Online

Did you know you can save time by going online?

Some services that can be requested online:

- Request a bulky item collection
- Request gritting or grit-bin refill
- Request new or replacement recycling containers
- Report a missed collection
- Report a road or pavement defect
- Report a street-light fault

You can also set up a My Calderdale account which is a fast, safe and more flexible way to access council services.

Upper Valley NPT
Ring 101 for non-emergencies

For non-urgent Police enquiries either telephone 101 or email  (in an emergency always dial 999)

The fear of anti-social behaviour in the Upper Valley has halved since 2008.

Fact: there were over a thousand fewer victims of crime this year compared to last, making Calderdale one of the safest places to live in West Yorkshire...

Burglaries increase when it gets dark

To report someone you suspect of growing cannabis, contact your local Neighbourhood Police Team on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

there is a new national phone number “105” will be launched by electricity network operators for customers to call should they need to report or get information about a power cut in their area.
Key points to note about this service are:
· Dialling 105 will put customers through to their local electricity network operator – the company that manages the cables, power lines and substations that deliver electricity into homes and businesses in their area.
· 105 is just one of the ways that customers can contact their electricity network operator. They can also contact them by phone or via their website, and most network operators are on social media too.
· 105 is a free service for people in England, Scotland and Wales.
· Customers can call 105 no matter who they buy their electricity from.
· Customers can also call 105 if they spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put anyone in danger. If there’s a serious immediate risk, they should call the emergency services too.

Banking telephone Scams

Don’t throw out anything with your name, address or financial details without shredding it first. – This will protect you from ID Fraud.

• If you receive an unsolicited email or phone call from what appears to be your bank or building society asking for your security details, never reveal your full password, login details or account numbers. Most banks will not approach their customers in this manner.

• If you are concerned about the source of a banking call, hang up. Make sure if you call your bank to check it was them, before you make the call check for a dialling tone BEFORE dialling their number. The number will be on printed on your bank statements.

• Check your statements carefully and report anything suspicious to the bank or credit company concerned.

• Your bank will never come to your home address to collect you or to collect you bank cards. Some scammers will tell you that you have been a subjected to bank fraud and ask for your pin number. NEVER EVER give this number to anyone. Your bank will never ask customer for these details.

• If you’re expecting a bank or credit card statement and it doesn’t arrive, tell your bank or Credit Card Company.

• Don’t leave things like bills lying around for others to look at.

• If you move house, always get Royal Mail to redirect your post.

• Get regular copies of your credit report from a credit reference agency.

Neighbourhood Team Update

School and staff holidays have meant a reduced team this month and the school holidays have meant nothing from our school-based Junior Wardens who will be back next term. In the meantime the team have been busy delivering the Flood Partner Newsletter, reporting issues across the Upper Valley and just generally working hard on your behalf.

After receiving complaints about speeding from local residents in Barkisland, the Upper Valley Neighbourhood team conducted a SID session on Saddleworth Road.  During our time there, we recorded vehicles travelling up to 65mph on a 30 mph road !  This is a very serious matter and the local Neighbourhood Policing team will be informed.

Whilst out and about enjoying the glorious weather, Community Wardens Simon and Zoe did a litter pick at Booth Wood reservoir car park.  As this is one of our beauty spots in the Ryburn Ward, we assist Yorkshire Water by removing any rubbish that has unfortunately been left behind by visitors.  We litter picked 2 bags of rubbish which was kindly removed by the Upper Valley Safer, Cleaner, Greener team.

Landmark Neighbourhood Watch Cybercrime Survey Launched
Help us understand the impact of cybercrime and be in with a chance to win £50 worth of M&S vouchers
Neighbourhood Watch has today launched a landmark new survey to understand the impact of cybercrime on communities across England and Wales.
Traditionally Neighbourhood Watch has been focused on keeping people safe in the places they live but with the advent of new technology, it’s clear people can be at their most vulnerable when they occupy online spaces.
Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting centre run by the City of London Police, revealed that last year cybercrime victims lost £28m to online criminals. It reports more than 12,000 cases of cybercrime every six months.
With the threat from online criminals only ever increasing, it is essential we understand the impact this type of crime has on members as well as their understanding and perception of cybercrime.
The survey, designed in conjunction with cybersecurity company Avast, takes just 10 minutes to complete and one lucky responder will be in with a chance to win £50 worth of Marks and Spencer vouchers.
The survey can be completed via the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/nw_cybercrime

Fraudsters Targeting Social Media Influencers
The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has received intelligence to suggest that fraudsters are contacting social media influencers, based in the UK and abroad, offering them the opportunity to market a bogus product, service or investment opportunity.
Fraudsters will present professional and credible pitches to the social media influencers and try to convince them to feature the opportunity for a fee on their social media profiles in order to entice unsuspecting followers of the influencer to sign up or make a purchase.
Additionally, fraudsters are using the names of well-known public figures, implying that their opportunity or product is endorsed by the figure when it is not.
The public should be aware that any apparent endorsement by celebrities, influencers or personalities does not necessarily mean that an investment, product or service is genuine. The public is urged to exercise a cautious approach to any such offer of investment, product or service with the same caution they would at any other time.

What You Need To Do
  • If you are purchasing goods from a company you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first, or ask friends or family for advice before completing a purchase.
  • Professional-looking websites, adverts or social media posts do not guarantee that an investment opportunity or product is genuine. Criminals can exploit the names of well-known brands or individuals to make them appear legitimate.
  • Avoid paying for goods or services by bank transfer unless you know and trust the person or company. Payments via bank transfer offer you no protection if you become a victim of fraud. Instead, use your credit card or payment services such as PayPal as they offer you greater protection if you become a victim of fraud.
Funding Secured For Road Safety In Calderdale
Over 520 people were prosecuted by police for the ‘fatal four offences’ in Calderdale in just over a year.
As part of Operation Hawmill, 527 people were issued fixed penalty notices for speeding, drink or drug driving, driving without a seatbelt or driving whilst using a mobile phone from March 2018 to April this year.
There were 128 illegal vehicles taken off the roads and 11 vehicles which had either been stolen or had been involved in crime recovered by police.
Operation Hawmill is additional targeted enforcement work by Calderdale Police to tackle dangerous driving and is funded by the Calderdale Safety Partnership.
It will relaunch on 1 August following a successful bid for more funding.
The Calderdale Road Safety Group has also recently secured speed indication devices for each of the partnership working areas.
They can be deployed by police, community groups, community safety wardens, neighbourhood wardens or anyone who wants to conduct speed checks in areas of concern.
T/Inspector Ben Doughty, co-chair of the Road Safety Delivery Group, said: “The public tell us time and time again that road safety is their number one concern in Calderdale.
“We are pleased to be able to introduce the speed indication devices to help tackle speeding in our communities, and at the same time, relaunch Operation Hawmill to target antisocial and dangerous driving.
“Despite an increased awareness, unfortunately we still see motorists on a weekly basis breaking the law and putting pedestrians, other road users and themselves in danger.
“The speed indication devices are an invaluable resource and will allow communities to prevent and detect speeding, and identify speeding hotspots for further enforcement action.”
The Calderdale Road Safety Delivery Group is made up of West Yorkshire Police, Calderdale Council, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and other representatives from Highways England, education sector and public health.
As well as regular officer deployments under Operation Hawmill and enforcement work through the Road Safety Delivery Group, officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Road Policing Unit, response teams and neighbourhood policing teams continue to tackle antisocial and dangerous driving on a daily basis.

Cllr Susan Press, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, said:
“Ensuring that residents and visitors to Calderdale feel safe and protected is a priority. We’re pleased to support these new steps to improve road safety as part of our firm but fair approach to enforcement. It gives further reassurance to local people that we’re doing all we can, in partnership with other organisations, to tackle the issues that matter to them most.”

If you would like to a speed indication device for your community, contact your neighbourhood co-ordinator,

Criminals Targeting People With Universal Credit Scam
Action Fraud has received 63 reports about a scam in which fraudsters target people with offers of “low cost” loans or “free” government grants. What the victims aren’t told is that the money they’ll receive is actually an advance payment for Universal Credit. The criminals use the personal information they’ve obtain under false pretences to make an application in the victim’s name. After the fraudsters have taken their “fee” from the advance payment, the victim is then left to pay back the total amount once their repayments begin.

How you can protect yourself:

Rishworth Robbery Offenders Jailed
Two men from Cheshire appeared at Bradford Crown Court on Friday 26th July 2019 in relation to an offence of robbery. The men travelled to the Rishworth area of Halifax area in March this year where they targeted a collector of high value coins.
They forced entry to the victims address whilst he was asleep in bed, tied him up with cable ties before making off with the coin collection.
Following investigations by Calderdale CID, the pair  were arrested later the same day having travelled back to the Cheshire area. Some of the stolen items were recovered in a local pawnbrokers shop.
Both pleaded guilty to the offence of robbery and were sentenced to 6 years each in prison.
Detective Inspector Gary Stephenson from Calderdale CID said after the sentencing, ‘ This was a terrifying attack on a vulnerable person in his own home. Hopefully todays imprisonment of the two men responsible will give some closure to the victim and warn off any other people thinking they can commit serious offences with no consequence.

For a fourth year in a row, the Home Office is providing funding to help places of worship tackle hate crimes against them through the installation of additional security equipment.
Hate crimes, for the purposes of this fund, are defined as any crimes committed against a person because of their real or perceived religion.
In a change to previous years, applicants are no longer required to show they have already experienced hate crime and will be able to apply if they can show they are vulnerable to hate crime.
The funding is available to churches, gurdwaras, mosques, temples, and associated faith community centres (defined as community centre run by a place of worship or near a place of worship that is faith based, and where regular worship takes place). Synagogues may not apply, as a similar commitment was made to fund Jewish community sites through a grant administered by the Community Security Trust.
The total funding pot for 2019-20 is £1.6 million. Grants of up to £56,000 per place of worship are available.
The funding is to be used for the cost of additional security equipment. Match funding of at least 20% of the total project costs is required. This will need to be paid in advance of the installation of the security measures.
The funding can cover the costs of up to three security measures from the following list:
• CCTV
• Fencing and/or railings
• Gates
• Doors
• Windows
• Alarms
• Locks
• Access control
• Intercom systems
