Last weekend I had the opportunity to test-teach a new class on Selbu-style mittens. The class project is a mini mitten with a ribbed cuff.
Super cute, eh? I crafted it to include all the salient aspects of traditional Selbuvotter – including bold patterning on the back of the hand, smaller-scale patterning on the palm, and a gusseted thumb – but also to be small enough to be a meaningful exercise in a three-hour class. Because, really, what’s the point of taking a class on Selbuvotter if you don’t get the chance to shape the thumb gusset, create the thumb opening, and pick up stitches for the thumb?
I also knit (most of) a sample with a lace cuff.
This mitten is likely to remain unfinished, so I’ll always have a WIP on hand, to show what the thumb opening looks like.
The inaugural, trial run of the class was very successful, in that I got valuable feedback from the students – starting with the very first minute of class, when several students pointed out that I’d misspelled the name of the class at the top of the handouts!
Whoops.
With corrections in place, I look forward to teaching this class again on the Northern Isles Knitting Cruise next July. Will I see you there?

Remember that itty bitty bit of brioche that I showed in my last newsletter? I decided to start over without the I-cord selvedges. Yes, the I-cord resulted in a smooth selvedges – but in Stunning String Luxury Fingering, even a simple stockinette selvedge feels smooth and luxurious, so why not go simple?
Since the re-start, I’ve made decent progress.
(And, yes, I feels just a scrumptious as it looks.)
The plan is to continue in plain brioche for a bit longer, then add some Thumbs Up patterning. It’s slow going on 3mm needles, but I’m going to keep chugging away because I want to see if the reality of the design idea matches my imagination. Hopefully, I’ll achieve “proof of concept” by the time Adventures in Brioche rolls around.

How cool is this? Stitch Makers Live is an online crochet conference scheduled for September 19-21. Eleven crochet designers will teach 15 classes live via Facebook. Bonus: each class comes with a crochet pattern. How handy is this, for crocheters who can’t travel to take classes?
Being that knitting is my business and crochet is one of my hobbies... I just might participate!

Yes, some of these abbreviations are rather verbose. Don’t worry! The Contribute page has convenience buttons. Press one, and the matching abbreviation gets entered into the edit window – so you don’t have to take a chance on mis-typing anything.

Many thanks to Lany for plugging away at a Vietnamese translation of the interface at Stitch-Maps.com!

Once again, Patterned Brioche sold out in a hurry. But spaces are still available in these classes:
