NANOOS Presentation for NOAA Shows Marine Heat Wave
NOAA's most recent West Watch was held on 10 September 2019. The webinar summarized coastal environmental conditions in the Western Region including discussion of the marine heat wave that has developed off the Pacific coast. The webinar included contributed slides from the NANOOS, CeNCOOS, and SCCOOS regions on their local coastal ocean conditions. NANOOS Director Jan Newton presented slides of satellite views and Pacific Northwest buoy data. Some buoys are recording temperatures >3 s.d. above normal. View the webinar slide set here.

The next webinar date is 9 January 2020.

Tsunami Preparedness App Improved
NANOOS revised our NVS Tsunami portal to re-establish links with the U.S. Tsunami Warning Center for their warnings to alert the public of an earthquake generated in the Pacific basin and potentially a destructive tsunami. The revision to the Tsunami Evacuation Zones web portal alerting capabilities will eventually enable similar information to be pushed directly to a user's smartphone, providing users with needed information about a distant tsunami. The improved Tsunami Evacuation App provides easy access to tsunami hazard areas on the Oregon and Washington Coasts. Whether you are a coastal resident or just taking a trip to the coast, you can use the app to see if you are in a tsunami evacuation zone, plan your evacuation routes, and download pulished evacuation brochures.
Great Attendance at Annual NANOOS Meetings
NANOOS held its annual Governing Council and Principal Investigator meetings on Aug 1-2 in Vancouver, Washington, at the Washington State University-Vancouver campus. Nearly 40 attendees from diverse NANOOS member institutions were present to review progress to date as well as to provide input on plans for the upcoming year. Many thanks to IOOS Deputy Director Krisa Arzayus and IOOS Association Director Josie Quintrell for joining to share updates and provide valuable feedback. Presentation slides from the Governing Council meeting can be viewed here.
User Engagement
NANOOS at the Ilwaco Tuna Club

NANOOS had the pleasure of participating in the Ilwaco Tuna Club Annual Members Celebration in Ilwaco, WA, on June 22.  Hosted by the Ilwaco Tuna club, NANOOS outreach staff member Paul Rudell hosted a demonstration table and seminar on using the NVS Tuna Fishers App and Seacast App to help fishermen catch tuna more efficiently and monitor sea surface conditions.

Thank you to the Ilwaco Tuna Club for hosting us, and for all the fishermen who stopped by the NANOOS booth to share their experiences with the app!
NANOOS Supports Students at NOAA Ocean Science Camp

NANOOS Outreach staff helped to facilitate an NVS tutorial and a buoy building and ocean data collection exercise. Students used the NANOOS NVS Data Explorer and Climatology applications to observe ocean buoy data and changing ocean temperatures. Student teams designed, built, tested, and deployed their own buoys in Lake Washington followed by analyzing results and presenting findings to parents and staff.

The camp is held each July and is directed by Washington Sea Grant. The campers are part of NOAA Science Camp's Junior Leadership Program.

NANOOS Engages Shellfish Growers

NANOOS had a booth at the 73rd Annual Pacific Coast Shellfish Growers Association (PCSGA) Conference and Tradeshow in Portland, OR, on 17-19 September. Paul Rudell, NANOOS Outreach, interacted with growers and scientists and demonstrated the NANOOS Shellfish Growers App.
