From the

Headmistress
Dear Parents

In our assembly this week we talked about the importance of taking responsibility for our own actions and not blaming others when something goes wrong.

All children make mistakes as they grow up.  All adults make mistakes as children; but we all agreed it was important to learn from our mistakes, move on and be forgiving to those who upset or hurt us.

It is important to listen to our children and I have always found discussions in assemblies and class with our children to be thoughtful, supportive and mature.  They show kindness and respect to each other.

Next week we will hold a harvest assembly and would like to donate food or donations to our local food bank.  They work hard supporting local families in need.

Enjoy the weekend.

 Rotary Club Shoebox Scheme

The Rotary Club do a wonderful job sending shoeboxes full of little gifts to children and families who are in need in Eastern Europe.

Rotary supply the special strong shoeboxes and ask you to fill them with a selection of small gifts for either children, teenagers, senior citizens, families and even new babies.  You choose and mark the box accordingly.

The boxes are then transported by road to Eastern Europe using Rotary clubs and other trusted partners to distribute them to those in need.

We would like to invite you to fill a box over the half term holiday.  If you would like to contribute, then please collect a shoebox from the school office.  Completed boxes should then be brought back, and dropped off at the school office, after the half term holiday, w/c 4th November.  The Rotary Club will then collect the filled boxes on Friday 8th November. To complete the gift, a donation of £2 is requested to help pay towards the cost of transport to Eastern Europe.
Our wonderful "Friends of Grantham Prep" have organised a Spooktacular Fancy Dress Party for the children on Thursday 17th October 2019.  Cost £4.50 per child. If you would like your child to go, please put your name down at the office.

We also have a " guess how many spooky sweets there are in the jar" competition, which is running from now until the 17th October.  The jar of sweets is outside the school office and costs 20p a guess.

Things to know:

- the fun starts at 4pm and finishes at 5.30pm

- margherita pizza will be served to children - any dietary requirements please let office

- our annual pumpkin competition returns! Please bring your carved pumpkins in the morning and placed outside the front of the school (no tea lights please!)

Making Porridge

The children in Reception have been reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears and were very excited to be making porridge. They were learning how the oats were grown and packaged ready for the shops. We then had a go at making and then of course eating the yummy porridge!

Mrs Ives
Diwali

The children in Reception and Pre-school had a super afternoon learning about the celebrations during Diwali which starts in a few weeks. They even had a go at making their own clay diva lamp. It was fascinating to hear them describing the texture and feel of the clay and trying to predict what would happen when the clay lamps were left to dry. The children are all very excited about decorating their creation next week!  Well done everyone!

Counting the pennies and lighting the way in Class One

This week's focus in Class One's Mathematics sessions has been money! The children have been showing how quickly they can recognise and choose the correct coins, matching the correct denomination and adding up totals. Everyone has worked very hard and is fully trained up for any half-term shopping sprees that may arise! We have also had an enjoyable time decorating the diva lamps made earlier in the term to celebrate the Hindu Festival of Diwali. Super effort Year One.  Mrs Bell

Gladiator Games

During a visit to Rome, Matthew H from Class 4 took the brave step of entering the Gladiator's arena at the famous Colosseum.  Fear not, this wasn't for real, but a fantastic opportunity to participate in a Gladiator experience.  Whilst on holiday, Matthew and his family enrolled for this amazing challenge and lived to tell the tale.  Dressed in Roman Armour he was able to learn all about the way these formidable warriors entertained the crowds.  Matthew received a certificate of Roman Citizenship to prove that he had indeed proved himself as a Gladiator.

Life Cycle of an animal

Over the past couple of weeks the children in class 5 have been writing an explanation text about the life cycle of an animal of their own choosing. The children began by researching on the Ipads all about their chosen animal before drafting their initial text. Once finished the children edited and improved their own work and also through peer editing looking at one another's work and suggesting improvements. The last part of the text was to illustrate the work they had completed. The final pieces I think speak for themselves...

Cross Country at Brooke Priory ( Rutland Water )

After the disappointment of the cancelled event at Witham last week, the cross country team got their running legs tested at the Brooke Priory event at Rutland Water on Friday. Despite a wet Grantham, the team ran in glorious conditions and produced some fabulous results throughout the team. Many children were tested thoroughly as the course was a good mixture of easy down hills and wickedly testing up hill battles. Hattie (Yr 5) won her race for the second year running and little sister Pippa (Yr4) also medalled again coming in second. Phoebe (Yr 5) also joined the medalists coming in 6th in her race. Cross Country is such a tough sport and just completing the course is seen as the number one goal. Brooke is the only race where our youngest stars get a chance to shine and the faces of the Infant Fun runners tells us why it is such an enjoyable race to take part in. Harry (Yr 1) arrived home in a stunning 2nd place with George (Yr2) close behind in 4th. Henrietta and Isabelle both finished triumphantly in the top 20 but confusion surrounded the finishing line and exact places were lost. The girls showed tremendous team spirit as they helped each other, hand in hand to complete the grueling course. Many congratulations to all who took part and represented the school admirably. I hope Charlie's mum has managed to wash out the Rutland Water farm yard smells after Charlie bravely battled the final stages of the race in just one shoe and one sock after a disagreement with a bog!! - true determination.

ISA Swimming Gala at Walsall

The annual gala to Walsall took place this week and the team had an early start with the coach departing at 07.30hrs. On arrival the team excitedly set about their warm up with real determination, and smiling faces were evident as we took our places for the start of a LONG competition. There were many fantastic races and all our children represented the school extremely well. Fourteen of our twenty two swimmers gained valuable points from the 117 races which took place. At this early stage official team results are not available but we can announce that Cora (Yr6) will be selected for the ISA Midlands Team that will travel to London for the National Finals. Cora will take part in the Yr 6 Girls Backstroke and Medley Relay event but watch this space, as there could be more successes when the official list of results becomes available soon. Congratulations to all 22 swimmers who took part in this mammoth 12 hour event.

Mr Park
U9 Hockey v St Hugh's

The under 9 girls travelled to St. Hugh's, Woodhall Spa to play hockey. For some of the year 3 and 4 girls this was their first ever match.

It certainly was a steep learning curve because we played on their grass pitch, which is very different to the the Meres wooden floored sports hall, where the ball travels quite easily and quickly.  Despite this, they all soon adapted to hitting the ball, rather than pushing it.

St Hugh's fielded all 28 of their year 3/4 girls, which meant our team playing four, ten minute halves in total, which is no mean feet, at their young age.

I think that the girls experience taught them to be mindful about crowding the ball. There is still a tendency to want the ball so badly that we end up getting in the way of each other, rather than moving into a space to receive a pass.

Please remember to try and pass before you’re tackled and to avoid the temptation to tackle your own team mates. There were a few minor injuries caused by simply being too close to our own team mates. If someone has the ball, we shouldn’t be closer than 5 metres to them, possibly 10 metres.

The final scores were:

A team: Match 1 (playing against 2 sets of girls) overall  7-0 loss.

Match 2: 5-0 loss. (Playing against two sets of girls)

B team: The scores were taken down as 4 separate 10 minute games, which was a fairer reflection.

4-0 loss
1-1 draw
1-0 loss
1-0 loss.

Well done to everyone who played. There was such determination and I liked the fact that all of the girls partook, despite some of them feeling nervous.

The girls had a tasty hot dog in a roll for match tea and some even managed a power nap in the minibus after their efforts.

U9 Tag Rugby v St Hugh's

The Grantham Prep U9 Tag Rugby team travelled to take on St Hugh's on a glorious Autumn afternoon. Both teams started brightly but it was St Hugh's who scored the opening try through some good individual skill. A few mistakes on defence led to a second try being scored by St Hugh's. Grantham rallied and fought back through some excellent team play, replying with 2 tries of their own. However, a lack of taking tags would cost Grantham as they headed into half-time behind. Grantham started the second half in assertive fashion, hitting back quickly through a mixture of individual brilliance and some good passing and movement. With the game ebbing and flowing throughout and both teams seeming to score tries when they wanted, it was St Hugh's who took a deserved victory, winning 11-6. In all a good experience for the Grantham team which should help in future fixtures.

Mr Tranter
U9 Tag Rugby v St Hugh’s

The B Team travelled to Woodhall Spa this week to try and show off some of their talents being honed on the training pitches over the last few weeks. It was a good start as we matched our hosts try for try until the end of the first half. Sadly our ability to run forwards and break the defensive line deserted us and we gave away some soft try’s which we were never able to recover from. A lack of tag taking also contributed to our downfall and led us all to agree on the bus home that some of our skills needed to be honed a little more! Score 5 - 12.
Hi 5 Netball - Priory Ruskin

The mixed squad of Hi 5 netball players partook in the first match of the Priory Ruskin Academy league.

They played National School, followed by Ropsley. After a sleepy start, the team found their form and went on to score. They won both of their matches comfortably, which is a very encouraging start to the season.

Remember to keep marking tightly when possession is lost. Also, to prevent losing possession, we need to ensure that we are working hard to find a space to receive the ball from our fellow team mates, without it being intercepted.

The next league match is on Thursday October 17th against Corby Glen, Barrowby and Denton Schools.

Let’s keep up the good work!

The Grantham Festival Fundraiser Concert

A huge thank you to the members of the senior choir who performed at The Grantham Festival Fundraiser Concert. You sang beautifully and I received many compliments on your behalf after the concert. I would also like to say very well done to Tozi Class 5 who performed two pieces on his saxophone. He played with confidence and flair.

PYP 1 Brainstorming Seasons

The PYP 1 group, started the term off with a bang. In groups, they brainstormed what winter, spring, summer and autumn means to them and how they could represent each season using different materials and without using words. This activity encouraged the students to be open-minded as each student had a different perspective.

The planning process in the art creation

Seventh grade students are creating an art project in the public space. In order to accomplish the work, they first learnt how to plan as a team by using a Gantt chart which is graphical illustration of a schedule that helps to plan, coordinate, and track specific tasks in a project.
It has been very gratifying to see how my students have managed to organise efficiently the assigned tasks step by step.

Learning how to plan is the base for making large-scales projects. It is a tool that will help them not only in art projects, it is a tool for life. Planning before doing, is an appropriate and efficient way to do things, to solve problems in their everyday life.
