SIS WEEKLY
深圳蛇口国际学校周报

Dear SIS community,
Thank you for your understanding of the need for our professional development day today.

ISS, our not-for-profit owners based in Princeton USA, and SIS have reputations based upon decades of expertise. To make sure that we continue to provide the highest quality education and care, we need to spend time continually developing expertise. Today the entire school spent time analysing every aspect of school performance. This includes such elements as curriculum,  pedagogy, communication,  and operations. The staff also spent time making sure that we had everyone qualified in emergency response techniques. Every member of our staff is trained and skilled in providing emergency care such as CPR and first aid. This is part of our commitment to care and safety.

The commitment to safety is a responsibility that we share. Every member of my staff ensures that they wear the red lanyard and ID card every day. This helps our students to know who they can turn to if they need assistance anywhere on the campus. We ask that parents wear their yellow lanyards and ID cards any time you come onto the campus. This quickly identifies who has a legitimate reason to be on-site. This week we were able to quickly identify a person who come on to our Jingshan campus without a lanyard or ID. Our security team observed her and then escorted her swiftly off campus after alerting the authorities. Our security teams are trained to observe carefully and reduce risk to students at all times. Your support by wearing the lanyard and ID really does make a difference in creating a safe and secure environment.

I had the great pleasure of attending a conference this week where delegates from across the region told me of their high regard for SIS. We have many good schools in Shenzhen and the region. It is a matter of pride that government, colleagues, and service providers all recognise SIS as a leader in international education among these good schools. We have a great school, and I thank you for your support in making it so.

Best regards

Greg Smith

We Have Good News To Share...

Did you know that SIS primary and secondary students have opportunities to participate in performing arts?

In secondary, all students in G6-12 are eligible to take part in the Fall Play. Students are cast depending on their personal preferences and schedules. Some students have only a few hours of rehearsal time and others have up to 60 hours. Students also volunteer for tech and backstage roles and participate in full scale technical and dress rehearsals before the big show. A small parent group of parent volunteers are a huge part of the process as costume and prop coordinators. The secondary drama club recently wrapped up a production of "Everyone Gets Abducted by Aliens" to great acclaim - the entire cast and crew was rightfully proud of the performance which was truly a community event! Kudos to Directors, Ms. Dowty and Ms. Gahr.

In upper primary, all students in G4-5 can participate in the Fall Play - there are no cuts or students turned away as long as they can commit to the rehearsal schedule. This year there are a total of 63 students participating in the "Pirates" musical, directed by Ms. Sheppard and Ms. Ferguson. Students have around 20 rehearsals of approx. 1.5 hours per rehearsal. That's 1900 minutes of rehearsal time! Dance cast members require an additional 3000 minutes of rehearsal! We are looking forward to seeing the culminating show from all the hard work of our upper primary students next Wednesday and Thursday (see poster below). Come support our awesome pirates!
