The Quickening of the Land and of the Moon
 

The full Cold Moon, also called the Wolf Moon, has recently passed, and it feels as if the land in the Northern Hemisphere has settled into slumber, while fires rage in the summer of the Southern Hemisphere.  (Please do all you can for Australia!)

The new Moon on January 24 heralds the Chinese New Year, as it is the first New Moon of the calendar year.  It’s the perfect time to set into motion all those goals you created on New Year’s Eve.  This night is yet another opportunity for a new beginning.
 
The Quickening Moon is full in Leo on February 9.  This is the full moon closest to Imbolc, the cross-quarter day when Mother Earth awakens from her rest in the northern hemisphere.  Because the Moon is full at 2:33 am, goes void of course at 11:08 am, and then moves into the sign of Virgo at 6:38 pm (all times are Eastern zone), it’s best to use the Leo energy of the night prior (February 8) for offering up powerful gratitude for the gifts you’ve been given, and are waiting to receive.  Remember that universal time is not necessarily our time, so you may need to wait for fruition of what you’ve set in motion. 

Just before New Year’s day, I cleaned every stone in my house, including stone jewelry.  Believe me, that’s an undertaking.  I mean I physically cleaned them.  All the ones that can be safely submerged in salt water were soaked, placed in sunlight, then rinsed and dried. All the ones that aren’t safe to put in water (the “-ites”) were placed on beds of sage and covered with sage for a day or so.  I wanted to begin the New Year with stones ready to be charged in the Cold/Wolf Full Moon later in the month.

As I touched and spoke with each rock, I contemplated my history with the stone, work we’re doing together, and the jobs the stone has agreed to take on as its “mission” in universal energy.  I also asked the stone to speak to me with suggestions about working together to create a new grid for my intentions for 2020.

This process reminded me that sometimes I need to go back to basics.  I pulled out my trusty Love Is In the Earth encyclopedia by Melody, and read the many pages about Quartz.  Quartz and its work are often overlooked, and shouldn’t be.  The family of Quartz is amazing!

Clear Quartz is basically an amplifier.  It undertakes whatever you ask it to do (I never use the term “program”!).  Clear Quartz provides clarity of thought and emotion, and is able to work with you so you are focused on a goal or task.

When found with points in a cluster formation, as in the picture above, clear Quartz acts as a catalyst for cooperation and clear communication.  You might try putting a cluster on a table in your family room.  The specimen shown also is a self-healed stone, so it acts as a reminder that old, unproductive patterns of behaviors and communication among friends and family can be healed.

Clear Quartz is easy to find, and don’t think bigger is always better.  My first crystal was a Quartz point about an inch long and thinner than a pencil in circumference.  That stone and I worked together for more than 25 years, until it finally broke.  I think it was just exhausted.  I buried the pieces in Mother Earth after offering much gratitude.

So, get to know your stones and sit with them.  Messages will come!

Tarot Meditation for the Month:  The Emperor
 

Seated firmly on his royal throne, the Emperor is an imposing figure.  His number in the Major Arcana is Four, the number of a solid foundation, logic, and stability.  As you know, this year – 2020 – resonates to the number Four as well, so The Emperor is a fitting correlate to the energy of this year.  The number Four in this key brings much significance: there are four cardinal points on a compass (east, south, west, and north), four elements (air, fire, water, and earth), four seasons of the year, and much more.  Four really is about balance, as is the Emperor.

In the Waite-Rider version of the key, the Emperor is surrounded by rams’ heads on the corners of his throne and on his left shoulder.  This indicates his relationship to solar, active, energy.  He wields an Egyptian ankh in his right hand.  The ankh is a symbol of Venus, and it is in the interest of balance that a symbol of the divine feminine is present on his right side, while he holds a globe of dominion in his left hand. 

While some see the Emperor Key as a war-like authority figure, he also represents controlled, analytic power that indicates he is thoughtful and careful in his decision-making.  He also is a father figure, the consort of the Empress, benevolent and generous.

As we move more deeply into the Four year, may we focus our attention on the balance and stability of which the Emperor reminds us, coupled with careful, kind, analytic thought.

New!  Book Recommendation of the Month

 Brigid: History, Mystery, and Magick of the Celtic Goddess

The first stirrings of the year toward spring occur around the cross-quarter day of Imbolc, celebrated on February 1-2.  The holiday honors the Celtic goddess Brigid. She is the goddess of holy wells, healing water, poetry, smithery and fire, early lambing, and milk.  So beloved was Brigid by the Celtic people that, when Christianity came to Celtic lands, love for her could not be squelched, and she was Christianized into Saint Brigid.  Her name is spelled many ways.

Courtney Weber’s wonderful book recounts Brigid’s varied histories and legends.  Weber brings Brigid up to date with guided meditations and exercises that assist the reader in connecting with Brigid and her blessings.  There also are spells, recipes, rituals, and blessings throughout the book that are sure to deepen the reader’s connection to Brigid and to bring the message of hope that Imbolc gives us year round.

This book is sure to propel you more deeply into the mysteries of Brigid, the Goddess of the quickening of Mother Earth, and so much more.
