In a few months time, you'll get to dust off your kilts for The Gathering Festival in Ipswich! This May, visitors will get to enjoy a wonderful celebration of Celtic music, culture and performance at one of Queensland largest celtic festivals.

Discover Celtic heritage against the historic backdrop of Ipswich, and witness the colour and spectacle of the Queensland Pipe Band Championships, featuring 250 of Australia’s pipe band competitors!
The event, proudly supported by BEMAC (through RASN funding), will feature talented Celtic artists throughout the venue in impromptu style performances, and also hopes to provide a platform to launch new talent within the local Ipswich community.

Happy Feet and Happy Trails
Keystone Dance Crew, a Logan based troupe, recently travelled to Nagoya, Japan to participate in a new iteration of Confusion Inclusion, a dance theatre performance.
Part of a cultural exchange project with Popeye Disability Services in Nagoya, BEMAC is proud to be supporting the crew from the Keystone Community Hub to participate in Confusion Inclusion. The Confusion Inclusion dance event takes its name from the idea that being creative is a way to connect.
Through RASN funding, Keystone Dance Crew were able to employ professional Butoh performer Megan White to help the group create 'The Magic Pool', a piece which they will perform at the event. Together these eight mixed ability dancers will collaborate and inspire the audience with the Popeye Dance Crew, empowering people with a disability to live proactively and creatively.

The Live and Local Music Sessions bring together the best musical talent of the Gympie Region to perform alongside other featured artists. This free, all-ages event is a chance for music lovers to share an evening of great live music in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere

Alisha Todd sings the songs of a curious traveller, bringing focus to the beauty of humans and nature alike. From her humble beginnings being raised on country and 90’s pop in small town Gympie to European explorations of getting lost to be found, Alisha’s music too has travelled and evolved in time to be the inspiring nuggets of unconditional encouragement needed while on the endless pursuit of happiness.
Surrounded by the wilds of the rainforest and the azure beauty of the reef in far north Queensland, Leanne Tennant is an artist who pulls you across boundaries. Her songs sweep and fall, rock and flow and bring you into her world – one where you can escape that concrete, check out for a little and get lost in myriad stories of real people, real life and real experiences.
Dan Horne is an English-born Australian singer/songwriter swiftly making his mark on the Australian music industry. The former bricklayer began his music career in 2015 busking on the streets whilst travelling. His one-man-band style is a mesmerising blend of foot drums, harmonica, multiple guitars and unmistakable vocals with unforgettable lyrics that are easy to relate to. Now living in Chatsworth near Gympie, Dan is a must-see act on the live music scene, rigorously touring and playing music festivals across the country.
Local emerging singer/songwriter, Ashley Pel is quickly making a name for herself on the local music scene. As one of the participants being mentored by industry professionals with the Plug-In Music Development Program, Ashley is on the brink of taking her career to next level.

Writing Sparks Joy
Write Sparks offers beginners and intermediate writers the opportunity to tell their stories while learning the skills of writing for performance. Participants will experience and learn how to progress their work from strength to strength through the structured support of award-winning playwright and dramaturge, Kathryn Ash.
The program is run over three residencies delivered throughout a 6-month period running from Friday afternoons through to Sunday afternoons (15 hours of intensive hands on development per residency), and also features a number of personal dramaturgical sessions with Kathryn to help craft your ideas.
These residencies will not only be an amazing opportunity to work your craft through activities and writing exercises but will also build a great network of peers. A limited number of participants will be able to attend the annual JUTE Playwrights’ Retreat, a weekend of fun, writing and play-reading. Participants will be aiming to develop a full first draft of a script for performance by the end of the year.

Open to visual artists, craftspeople, makers and designers from the Banana Shire, Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Gladstone, Mackay, North Burnett and the Rockhampton regions, the dates for these 20 person workshops are as follows:

These workshops, funded through Arts Queensland and CQ RASN, sourced participants through an Expression of Interest process over two months, seeking out those most keen to develop their creative business and commercialised product range.

Turn Back the Clock at Cooktown
CY & TS RASN is working with Cook Shire Council, stakeholders and artists from across Cape York to put a spotlight on Indigenous culture, history and heritage during the first weekend of Cooktown Expo 2020.
Waratah Nicholls, the RASN Regional Arts Officer, has engaged with artists from across the region, dancers from Hopevale, Coen, Mapoon, New Mapoon, Injinoo and Lockhart and visual artists from Bamaga, Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, New Mapoon, Napranum and Seisia, as well as musicians and bands from Portland Roads, Weipa, Bamaga and Hopevale. They are all excited to be part of this fabulous regional initiative. Many of these artists will be performing or exhibiting their work at the Ngutha-Ngutha Back In Time showcase.
The Ngutha-Ngutha Back In Time showcase will take visitors on a journey through the culture and daily life of the Guugu Yimithirr and KuKu Yalanji Bama who have lived in the region for thousands of years. Cooktown Expo 2020 runs from July 17 to August 4 2020, and will showcase Cooktown’s unique story of 250 years of shared history, stemming from the 1770 arrival of explorer James Cook. The three week regional showcase will put the spotlight on the history, adventure, culture and natural beauty of Cooktown and Cape York.
“This special event invites people to experience a day in the life of the Indigenous people of the region, as they lived before the arrival of Europeans,” Cook Shire Council Expo 2020 Director Merryn Hughes said.
The Ngutha-Ngutha showcase will take place in a traditional village created for the weekend, and will feature workshops and displays of traditional life, including spear throwing, fire making, language workshops, underground oven cooking, painting and dance. The showcase is a collaborative project, supported by the National Museum of Austalia in partnerships with neighbouring Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council, Wujal Wujal and Hope Vale community groups and Aboriginal corporations.
Other events on the program for first weekend of the festival, from July 17 to 19, include the Reconciliation Rocks music festival, featuring Troy Cassar-Daley, Busby Marou, Mau Power and a host of local performers and a re-enactment of the first recorded act of reconciliation between Captain Cook and the Guugu Yimithirr Bama.

There Goes The Neighbourhood...On Tour!
A collaborative production between La Boite Theatre, The Empire Theatre and SWQ RASN, The Neighbourhood is currently showing in Brisbane.
An intimate story-telling experience that transports audiences across countries, borders and oceans, the production presents seven real-life journeys detailing the experience of fleeing one's homeland to seek refuge in Australia, in turn creating, fostering and discovering a new community (or neighbourhood).
Written and co-created by the story-tellers themselves, The Neighbourhood is co-created with Todd MacDonald, Aleea Monsour and Ari Palani with an ensemble of seven Queensland based storytellers.
The play will travel to Toowoomba towards the end March showing at The Empire Theatre. |

Festival Granted
Congratulations Surat Aboriginal Corporation on their successful application of the Year of Outback Tourism grant!
The result of this funding will see the inception of the Bambii Gi Festival in Roma to be held on the 26th of September this year. The event is planned to be an Indigenous cultural festival.

Good Vibrations
Valley Vibe Festival - 22 and 23 May 2020 - Gatton
The newly formed Lockyer Creative Collective is centered in the spectacular Lockyer Valley, an hour west of Brisbane.
They are organising an event that will bring the Valley together. Starting with an Artists' Dinner on Friday evening, the 22nd of May (at a hidden location!), the Valley Vibe Festival will also be an opportunity for local artists to network and grow The Collective, giving artists and performers a presence in the community and a chance to market their wares, showcasing the wonderful opportunities to be involved in The Arts to the wider community.

Bright Lights and Futures
NQ RASN’s host organisation launched its first exhibition for 2020!
Nick Drake’s exhibition 'Overthink' and Emily Donaldson’s 'Pandanus in the Desert' were combined with the farewell of Director Kellie Williams and the welcome of new Director Kate O’Hara at Umbrella Studios in Townsville.
Our RASO NQ officer also took a crew of creatives out to Ravenswood historic town to scope the town for this year's inaugural projection and light festival, part of the North Australian Festival of the Arts in July.

Red Ridge are very honoured to receive recognition from Blackall-Tambo Regional Council, awarded Australia Day Cultural Event of the Year. A resounding thank you again to everyone involved with the project - this award was a true team effort!

Put on Your Red Ridge Shoes and Dance!
Red Ridge is very excited to be kicking off dance lessons in the communities of Blackall, Tambo and Winton!
From ballet, jazz, musical theater and hip hop, these classes welcome students of all ages and skill levels in celebration of dance across the region. This initiative couldn't have been delivered without the partnering councils of Blackall Tambo-Youth and Winton Connect - Winton Shire.

Blending Colours Out West
Early this month, excitement was stirring in the tiny community of Augathella Town, as artists from Blender Studios hit the west to transform the iconic Augathella Water Tower into a an epic mural display. The mural for this site, part of Red Ridge's Trailblazing the West public art project aims to capture the pioneering spirit in of the region in rivers and gamuts of brilliant colour. boasting stockmen, bullock teams, bird-life and of course the Warrego River that the town was built upon.
Proving the value of arts to tourism, Red Ridge are proud for this project to be supported by RASN, Arts Queensland, the Queensland Outback Events Program and Murweh Shire Council. See more progress shots here!

New Tourism Fund backs Indigenous Tourism Experiences
The Palaszczuk Government has launched a new $10 million Indigenous tourism fund to create economic opportunities and jobs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.
Tourism Minister Kate Jones said the Growing Indigenous Tourism in Queensland Fund was being delivered as part of the 2020 Year of Indigenous Tourism in Queensland.
Ms Jones said the fund set out to support new, unique and innovative Indigenous tourism products and experiences in Queensland, particularly in regional areas.
“Launching a new business or tourism experience is tough. This program is about helping Indigenous tourism businesses to get established,” she said.
The fund comprises two categories. There is up to $25,000 available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander enterprises, like Aboriginal corporations, Prescribed Body Corporates, Indigenous tourism businesses and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councils, to develop a concept for an Indigenous tourism product or experience.

GLAMSLAM is a day for all those working in or with Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums – to come together and talk about the pressing issues facing cultural institutions and to share their work.
Combining discussion with provocations, Lightning Talks, Showcase Booths and opportunities to meet and GLAMJam these issues along with two keynote presentations, GLAMSLAM 2020 will aim to map out the challenges and opportunities facing Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums, and think about how we might work together to tackle them.

Under the Umbrella
New Director Kate O’Hara takes over as Director of Umbrella Studios from Kellie Williams. Kate comes to the Studio with over 15 years experience in curatorship and arts management. Most recently she managed Maningrida Art & Culture, a large and prestigious Indigenous art centre in Arnhem land. Previous to this Kate worked with a number of arts organisations in South East Asia, including Romeet Contemporary Art Space in Phnom Penh, Cambodia as their inaugural Curator and Manager. She particularly enjoys working with diverse contemporary art communities, assisting with innovating and growing programs and artist platforms.
Kate is looking forward to getting to know the Umbrella community and leading the team in this particularly exciting time for the organisation.
Umbrella is also proud to announce the establishment of a Transitions Program in 2020. Secured thanks to RADF funding, small group structured learning sessions for students transitioning out of uni, TAFE or high school are now able to be supported via a developing an arts practice outside of formal study environments. Previous director Kellie was also able to introduced a Deadly Development program supporting North Queensland First Nations artists, which will include exhibition outcomes in both the North Australian Festival of Arts (NAFA) and the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF).

Old Amos leads an eccentric life hidden deep in the tropical rain forest of Far North Queensland's Cassowary Coast. He's a bohemian eco-warrior, a spiritual eclectic and a cantankerous loner but for the occasional visit from his mysterious neighbour, Josie. His idyllic existence living amongst the Orange-footed scrub fowl and the illusive Cassowary however is endangered when his estranged daughter Paula moves in. She has her eyes on his precious real estate; she has plans. Over my dead body, thinks Amos. He may be right.

Mission Beach (140km from Cairns city) writer Laurie Trott emerged from JUTE’s 2016 'Write Sparks' and 2017 'Writers-In-Residence' development programs. In 2018, Laurie was asked to pitch her script to JUTE for further development resulting in a one-week creative development of the work in March 2019.
Knowing that this new work would require a fine comedic director, JUTE approached Bridget Boyle, who fell in love with it on first read. It is a quirky story set in the context of divergent beliefs about how to manage the conservation of the oldest continuous rain forest in the world, and the many creatures who depend on it to survive.
The Cassowary bird becomes larger than life, a mythical character in the play. The audience will feel a deep sense of immersion in our ‘rain forest that meets the sea’ through a sculptured soundscape, canopied set design and the use of stylised digital rendering to tell the Cassowary’s story.
Stephen Tandy (of ‘The Sullivans’ fame and last seen on the JUTE stage in the Matilda Award Winning ‘Bastard Territory’) was an obvious casting choice for the aging but sharp-minded Amos, playing against the powerful stage presence of Cairns-based actor Natalie Taylor as his assertive daughter, Paula. Folded into the mix is the enigmatic Yvette Walker, First Nations actor, cast as the mysterious neighbour, Josie.
A great trio to tell this compelling story!

Roadcase is a free event and extension of Queensland Touring Showcase specifically tailored to the programming needs of community presenters, local arts councils, regional councils and festivals. At Roadcase you will have the chance to meet presenters from your region, discuss local priorities, challenges and discover common opportunities.

Bigger, Better Outback
The start of the 2020s has seen more Outback event funding to help the industry, as the Year of Indigenous Tourism also ramps up!
The third round of last year’s Year of Outback Tourism Events Program will deliver an expanded calendar of events throughout rural and regional Queensland, with opal fossicking, Indigenous experiences and a new desert dash to encourage tourists to go inland from coastal centres, interstate and abroad.
The final round is now open, for events to be delivered prior to 31 December 2020.
Applications for round four close on 16 March 2020, with successful applicants to be announced in May 2020. The Outback Tourism events integrate with the Year of Indigenous Tourism which will further promote, expand and develop Queensland’s unique indigenous tourism attractions and events as the year goes on.
That includes a $10 million Indigenous Tourism Fund to grow the industry and to support new jobs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Colleagues and educators across Australia are invited to register for the Drama Australia National Conference – 2020 VISION, hosted by Drama Queensland in Brisbane. What is your 2020 Vision?
As we head towards 2020, the question must be asked – what is our vision as drama educators? Who or what will be the drivers of change? It is important that there is clarity within our shared vision and that we continue to advocate for both our subject and ourselves. It is necessary to look back retrospectively and use the wisdom and insight of the drama ‘greats’ who have gone before us to position the arts well into the future. Our focus must be on providing critical and creative opportunities for our students and to encourage both passion and rigour within our subject. Creating this vision ensures that we continue to provoke, innovate and lead educational reform.

Over the past few months, Sunshine Coast Council's Creative Arts and Events team have been working on one of the goals within the Sunshine Coast Arts Plan 2018-38 which requires the development of a brand and brand strategy designed to promote the reputation of the Sunshine Coast and our arts community, both nationally and abroad, as a creative destination to live, work and visit.
Sunshine Coast Council have been working with a Sunshine Coast marketing consultant and a diverse range of arts and tourism sector stakeholders over the past 12 months to develop the strategy and the ARTSCOAST logo, and now we need your input into a key decision – choosing the ARTSCOAST visual identity!

Creative Development Program
It’s no secret that we love artists. And HOTA's Creative Development Program is one of the ways we put our money where our mouth is. In 2020, we’re again offering funding, support and resources to help local artists develop their ideas.
What’s it all about?
This program provides platforms for creative development, presentation and collaboration. We want artists, connected to our region, to take risks, experiment and create great art. In 2019, we flung the doors open for artists to experiment with various ideas. In 2020, we now have three focus areas: HOTA Program, Collaborations at Carriageworks and Open proposals and over $200,000 in cash and in-kind resources is on offer.

A Hub of Activity
APRA AMCOS is an alliance of major collection societies for musicians. Through the SongHubs initiative, they are able to partner emerging and established APRA AMCOS songwriters with renowned international songwriters and producers to create new works for local and international markets.
With immense and considerable potential for members and collaborations, SongHubs takes place in both domestic and international locations. The program functions as an intensive, commercially focused songwriting residency, providing unique collaborative opportunities for both published and unpublished songwriters and composers, irrespective of genre. In 2019 there were fifteen of these crucibles, held as far away as Bali, Berlin, London, Brooklyn and Seoul, and last November, the program was extended to screen composers for the first time.
