Guidance for churches

General guidance from the Church of England and the Government

The threat posed by COVID-19 has been assessed by the Chief Medical Officer as ‘moderate’. This permits the Government to plan for all eventualities. The risk to individuals remains low. Individuals should follow good hygiene practices, using tissues to catch coughs and sneezes and binning the tissues, and keeping hands clean.

There is no Government advice at present to suggest that the use of the common cup at Holy Communion should be suspended

Churches should already be following best-hygiene practices that include advising parishioners with coughs and sneezes to refrain from handshaking during The Peace and to receive Communion in one kind only.

It is also best practice for churches to have hand-sanitisers available for parishioners to use.

In addition, priests presiding at the Eucharist, communion administrators and servers should wash their hands, preferably with an alcohol-based (minimum 60%) hand-sanitiser.

Intinction is not recommended (even by celebrants or communion-administrators) as this represents an infection transmission route.

Best hygiene practice should continue to be observed in all pastoral contacts.

#LiveLent: Care for God's Creation is the Church of England’s Lent Campaign for 2020. Church House Publishing has produced booklets for adults and children, inspired and informed by the Archbishop of Canterbury's 2020 Lent Book, Saying Yes to Life by Ruth Valerio (SPCK).

Details of the full range of Lent resources for individuals, churches and groups – both print and digital – are available on the Church of England website.

This Lent, we hope both adults and children might engage in God’s plea for us to “Care for Creation”. It is an opportunity for us to rebuild our relationship with our planet, and in turn with the God who is Lord of everything.

Thy Kingdom Come Launch Event 2020

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement inviting Christians to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ.

What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.

Hosted jointly by the Nottingham and Derby District of the Methodist Church and the Diocese of Derby, this launch workshop shows you the resources and information for this year’s event - 21 to 31 May 2020 - and describes how you and your church can get involved.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear first-hand from the national Thy Kingdom Come team about the wonderful work God has done, and is doing, and how individuals, families and churches can get involved this year and the wide range of resources available to help.

These free sessions are open to all, but booking is essential.

National Churches Trust Survey

The National Churches Trust is inviting churches, chapels and meeting houses throughout the UK to take part in a new online survey to help find out how they are maintained, funded, managed and contribute to their wider communities.

The survey is available online and will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The deadline for completion is Weds, 4th March 2020.

Data from the survey will be used in a new study into the benefits that churches provide to local communities and to the UK more generally. The new research will build on a similar study, undertaken in 2010, which looked at the physical condition of places of worship and also the way they are managed, funded and used by their communities.

>> Find out more about the work here

The National Churches Trust also provides the following grant support to churches:
  • Cornerstone  - Grants of £10,000 to £50,000 towards urgent and essential structural repair projects with estimated costs of at least £100,000, and the installation of kitchens and toilets with estimated costs of at least £30,000, to improve access for all.

Roof Alarm Grants - protecting churches from metal theft

Allchurches Trust’s Roof Protection Scheme provides grants to help churches install roof alarms in response to the issue of metal theft, which continues to be a very challenging issue across the UK.

They have recently extended this scheme until the end of 2020 and increased the amount of funding available, with grants now funding up to 50% of the cost of the alarm, up to a maximum of £2500.

Grants under Allchurches’ Roof Protection Scheme can be made direct to individual churches, but also through dioceses and local historic churches trusts for distribution to churches in their areas.
