1. Highlights

 ICHEME GLOBAL AWARD  Congratulations to Professor Christos Markides who was awarded the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Award for Best Research Project and was highly commended in the Energy category.

Dr Rongjun Chen was highly commended in the Biotechnology Award category, and Professor Nina Thornhill and Dr Sara Budinis were highly commended in the Training Award category. Read more 
 AICHE   Delegates from the department attended the annual conference of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), where they held a reception attended by over 400 guests and alumni, including Imperial President Professor Alice Gast. Over 40 academics and students attended the conference, many of whom presented their research. Read more 
 COLLABORATION   The Sustainable Gas Institute (SGI) has announced the start of 25 new research projects at Imperial College through the Gas Innovation Fellowship programme (GIFP). The researchers will be spread across Imperial College departments in Chemical Engineering, the Centre for Environmental Policy (CEP), Aeronautics, Civil Engineering, and Earth Sciences and Engineering.  BARRER  The Barrer Centre held its first symposium alongside its annual Barrer Lecture, where researchers from across the UK shared the latest in separations materials. It was attended by over 100 delegates and also showcased the latest work taking place in the centre. See the photos

2. Students

 TEAMBUILDING   Our team of Teaching Fellows ran their first team building sessions with our new cohort of undergraduate students, where they took part in several challenges to develop their team-working skills. See the photos 
 ENTERPRISE  Undergraduate Yousuf Al-Riyami was part of the team who took joint third prize at the Enterprise Lab Launch Weekend 2018 competition. They successfully pitched their idea to develop an outfit planning app that can help users choose what to wear from their wardrobe and suggest new clothing to purchase. Read more
 FUTURE LEADERS  Blessed Mahovo, second year undergraduate, has been inducted into the Future Global Leaders Fellowship programme, which picks 20 ambitious students and matches them with global mentors who support them in developing the skills needed for them to fulfill their potential.  CHECKMATE  Congratulations to fourth year undergraduate Thomas Donaldson who won the Northern Irish (Ulster) Chess Championship in the summer. Read more  
 ICESKATING  The MSc well-being rep Meriam Mohammedture organised an ice-skating session at the Natural History Museum ice rink - a welcome break for many!   

3. Alumni

 GRADUATION  Congratulations to the class of 2014 who graduated and joined our ranks of alumni! See the photos
 APPOINTMENTS  While we are sad to say goodbye to several postdocs who are moving on to positions elsewhere, we're also excited to see what they do next and wish them all the best in their endeavors!
  • Dr Salman Shahid will start a lectureship in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath
  • Dr Aditya Karnik has started a lectureship at Robert Gordon University (Aberdeen)
  • Dr Jason Stafford has accepted a lectureship position at the University of Birmingham 
  • Dr Mirco Magnini has accepted a lectureship position at the University of Nottingham
  • Dr Lisa Joss has been awarded one of the two BP-ICAM Kathleen Lonsdale Research Fellowships and will join the University of Manchester.
 IRONMAN  Former undergraduate student Anna Lawson competed in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, completing a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42.2km run. She finished in 10 hours and 41 minutes, placing her 7th in her age category!

4. Research News

 PEGABET  Research by Dr Ruijao Dong and Professor Andrew Livingston was published in Nature Chemistry. It details their success in creating a new class of multi-precision polymer with their 'Nanostar Sieving' technique. They also adapted the polymer sequence to spell 'LOLLOL' and 'LONDON'. Read more

 COVER FEATURE  An article by Professor Omar Matar, Dr Camille Petit and Dr Jason Stafford is the cover feature for the December/January issue of The Chemical Engineer. It looks at the engineering challenges of scaling up the production of graphene, and is available to view online.

5. Awards & Appointments

 INTERIM DIRECTOR  Professor Andrew Livingston has been appointed Interim Director for the Rosalind Franklin Institute until May 2019.
 FELLOW  Professor Omar Matar became Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). 
 PAPER AWARDS  
 EDITORSHIP  Professor Sergei Kazarian has taken up the position of Editor-in-Chief for Applied Spectroscopy, a particularly notable achievement as he is the first of the journal's editors to reside outside of North America in the journal's 60 year history.
 PHD PRIZES  Several PhD students have won awards:
  • Ravi Shankar won the Highly Commended poster prize at the Energy Futures Lab Renewable Fuel Generation and Energy Storage Symposium.
  • Phantisa Limleamthong won the Anglo Thai Educational Award for Excellence in Evnvironment 2018.
  • Luciana Miu won Best Paper at the International Conference on Sustainable Development.

 RECOGNITION   The department recently launched its reward and recognition scheme for professional and research staff. Congratulations to our first cohort of award recipients (pictured) who were announced at our staff mixer in November!

 NEW LIBRARIAN  Welcome to our new subject librarian Lynne Meehan! 

"Hello, my name is Lynne Meehan and I am your new librarian for Chemical Engineering. I am your primary point of contact with the library and here to support the learning, teaching and research needs staff and students in the Chemical Engineering Department. I support the department by providing training and on finding, managing and evaluating information, answering queries about the library and its resources( including the Leganto reading list system), and providing research advice in areas such as open access and research data management.

 NEW ARRIVALS  Congratulations Chris Mazur who has become a first time dad - we hope you're enjoying the time with the new member of your family!
 REMEMBERING  Our thoughts are with the family of Dr Mike Carabine who passed away recently after a stroke. He was an extremely good Senior Tutor and UG Admissions Tutor - and a good friend to the Department, where he worked for just under 40 years.
