SCWIST SPOTLIGHT
The WHY of technology entrepreneurship
in creating educational economic access
by Alison Knill, UBC Graduate School of Journalism

The technology expansion has opened up a plethora of possibilities for innovation, but it also comes with the challenge of learning how to use it. Annee Ngo took on the challenge and is now using technology to support students through learning and economic opportunities as a result.

Annee created Startup League after she completed the StartEd program at New York University, which is the parent company of both Protohack and QUP. Together, Protohack and QUP help Annee achieve her goal of economic access and inspiring innovation. She now runs as Startup League as the CEO with her other two co-founders, Rukshana Hassanali and Matthew Jones, but it was a journey to get there. Read more.
Women at greater risk of losing jobs to automation
but their skills could shine in better roles

-STAR Business Journal
“Automation taking jobs away is not necessarily a bad thing...Both in academia and in various areas of IT (information technology), I’ve definitely experienced that women are under-represented in leadership and executive positions ... There are systematic problems in our society where we don’t have diversity … There is bias in hiring, there is bias when we promote people, and there’s a lack of female role models.” - Christin Wiedemann (past SCWIST President)

EVENT RECAP
SCWIST Wonder Women Networking Evening, Mar 6
Every year, participants get to meet amazing "Wonder Women" with careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. This event allows participants to learn about how other women have navigated their career paths and shows them possible career trajectories. This year's event brought 170 attendees to Science World to meet and learn from 36 Wonder Women, from a rocket scientist to a wood engineer. This event has sold out for nearly 10 years straight and boosts the careers of women who are still students or who are looking to change careers. Teaching valuable networking skills in a low-risk environment that features a wide variety of careers is what make this event amazing every year. More photos here. Have photos to share? Upload here. SCWIST Ms. Infinity @ YEET, Mar 3-4

Each floor of the Anvil Centre in New Westminster was packed with 600 attendees on March 3 and 4. Holding up to its acronym, participants were really given the opportunity for Youth Exploration and Experimentation in Technology (YEET). SCWIST workshop tables were reimagined as encyclopedic entries in the two action-packed days. Teaching children about forensic entomology, SCWIST member Payten Smith and volunteer Cassidy Smith painted a picture of crime scenes and post mortem intervals with maggots! The following day, Vienna Lam gave an anatomical tour of various skeletal bones. Overall, it was the perfect way to kick-off Innovation week! (Payten Smith, SCWIST Youth Outreach Team)

SCWIST Pub Night- Mar 12

Letitia Henville topbilled SCWIST's Pub Night for March, talking about her journey towards a freelance editorship in the scientific writing community and providing advice on writing for academic and corporate audiences. Participants engaged actively sharing their struggles with technical writing. Leticia responded with do's and dont's for the following topics (and more): writing an email in corporate sector, writing a long grant proposal, the time frame and mental preparation for writing blogs, short reports, or long grants. Letitia emphasized that as an editor, her main focus is on style of writing rather than correcting grammar. Her general advice for effective writing:

  • Limit the number of words per sentences.
  • Find replacements for any 'to be’ verb and limit the frequency of prepositions.

The important takeaway of this session was: learn the technique of writing concisely and effectively to pass accurate and complete information to your audience, whether in academia or in industry. Find more of Letitia's advice and resources at shortishard.ca.  (Neha Gadhari, SCWIST Communications Team)
