Signal from the Sailing Secretary
Innovation Following much consultation and debate in the Sailing and Main Committee we are making quite a number of changes to our Spring/Summer schedule and formats of races, which starts on Sunday 31st March, and to our guidelines for cruising. This is aimed to get more members on the water and using the lake.
New Racing Formats On Saturdays, after the morning adult and youth training, we start with our very successful Novice Race Series which will commence at 1.30 PM. As before, the Novice race will be a short race with a simple course, intended to give members, who have not raced before, (or only a little bit) encouragement to start racing in an easy and unhurried fashion.
Although our pursuit races are the most popular races in the calendar we received feedback that they were too long and therefore not readily accessible/agreeable to some. We are going to shorten the pursuit race to about 50 minutes (down from 72) with a more compressed start sequence. Please be sure to check the new Pursuit Start Times which apply from 31st March by clicking the button below, or by checking the list by the course board at the club.
Last year, the last race in the day was often poorly attended so we are now going to run this directly after the second race in the afternoon of the day (back to back) and in order to top up the racing on a Sunday morning we are going to add in another GH also back to back with the Pursuit. So what does this all look like:-
Day
Time
Race
Notes
Saturday
13.30
Novice Race
14.15
Pursuit 50 mins (P)
Immediately after
General Handicap (GH)
Sunday AM
10.45
Pursuit 50 mins (P)
Immediately after
General Handicap (GH)
Sunday PM
13.30
Pursuit 50 mins (P)
Immediately after
General Handicap (GH)
The above format will hopefully encourage more sailors onto the water and with the benefit of slightly earlier finish times for the duty crews each day but providing more sailing/cruising and racing all round. There were some suggestions about having more Class specific and gender specific races etc. in the programme, however, your Sailing Committee were firmly of the opinion that such specialist races would, by default, prevent many others from sailing at certain times. Indeed there are already the specialist and gender specific series embodied in our race program and the Class cups awarded to the successors in the various major Classes sailed at PSC.
Cruising We welcome the appointment of David Birch as our Class Captain representing cruisers. You will often see him in his red Graduate on the lake and will hear more from him during the year with ideas and initiatives. If you would like to be kept up to date please email him at dcb2101@ntlworld.com to get on his cruising email group.
To encourage more to get on the water for social sails we are further enhancing our guidelines for cruising; cruisers will be permitted to cruise the whole of the lake on Sunday afternoons (as from end of morning racing) and during the last race on Saturdays. Also the cruising area, marked by the white markers on the shore near the Silver birch on the right bank is going to be extended. We continue with our Wednesday social/cruising evenings. Cruising is available when A safety boat is launched with a capable crew in readiness for rescue duties. And will be available for up to 30 minutes after the last race each day covered by the on duty safety boat team.
Coaching We have agreed that coaching will be permitted during all races for those who would benefit from advice and guidance and positively encouraged during the Novice Race.
We are going to run the above changes for a trial period during the Spring Series and will modify as necessary depending on feedback. Any feedback to me or any Main Committee Member.

Race Officer Training - for aspiring and existing PROs - 4th April, 7.30pm
If you are a PRO already, and would like a refresher to bring you up to date with the new racing programme, or if you have always rather wanted to be the person in charge of Club Racing, but not been quite sure what is involved, this is the evening for you. Our Top Team of Frank Brown, Fraser Hayden, Tom Key and Alan Fuller will give you a complete run down on how to organise the racing, laying a course, sorting out the starts and finishes, and entering the results. If you would like more info, or if you want to confirm your attendance, email Frank on frankbrown1@ntlworld.com or give him a ring on 07888 773799
If you have also always wanted to become a Dinghy Instructor too................
Dinghy Instructor Course 8-12 July
We are running a Dinghy Instructor Course from 8th - 12th July. Candidates must be 16 years old with a reasonable level of sailing ability and a real passion to pass on their skills and experience to our novice sailors. We are always looking for more adult and cadet instructors so please contact Tom Key on tom_key@hotmail.com if you would like further information.
Alice Masterman - Thank you
Over 60 members, including 30 youth sailors, came to listen to former Papercourt member Alice Masterman last Thursday. Alice learnt to sail in an Optimist at Papercourt and is now preparing for Olympic selection in the 49er FX class. It was fun to hear stories of her early sailing career at Papercourt and inspiring to hear how she keeps her dream of Olympic glory alive through dedication, commitment and hard work, combining sailing with academic success, and coaching. We wish her success and look forward to hearing of her selection for the Olympic squad.
Thank you to Alice for giving up her time to come and see us, and hopefully inspire the upcoming generation.
Pictures below show Alice from Papercourt cadet to Olympic hopeful sailor, a packed clubhouse, and some of our current crop of Olympic hopefuls with Alice

Work Party - Many thanks to everyone who came - but more to be done
Thirty three of our number turned out for the March Work Party, we all owe them a big Thank You. We could have done with double that number.
Those that obliged had a good day and plenty of smiling faces could be seen. Breakfast butties and coffee started the day. A very good fare was provided for lunch followed by a substantial afternoon tea and cakes.
Three major jobs were accomplished and numerous small ones. However, there are still plenty of Repairs and Renewals on-going. To carry these out we operate a WORK GROUP. That is a group of individuals with varying skills to keep our Papercourt Sailing Club running smoothly for all the Members. If you have time to spare in the week or you visit the Club with your children on Saturdays then perhaps you would contact me and offer your services.
Power Boat Course - 27th March (eve) 29th and 30th March
If you are thinking of becoming an instructor, (or taking the DI course above), helping out on Saturday mornings, or would just prefer to do your duties on the water rather than in the Galley, this is the course for you. Contact Helen Bennet on helenbennett43@yahoo.com as soon possible if you have any questions, or if you want to join the course.
Topper Open - Sunday 7th April - All Papercourt Toppers Welcome
Calling all Papercourt Toppers - our very own Topper Open Meeting is on Sunday 7th April and the details are in the poster above. Youth and Adult Topper sailors all welcome. If you could let Andy Wyatt - your class captain - know if you are coming that would help with the catering. Email: andy.m.wyatt@btinternet.com
