From the

Headmistress
Dear Parents

Congratulations to all our children who performed brilliantly last Monday at our Gala, bringing home the trophy and breaking two school records.

Also I enjoyed attending the "Little Genius Quiz Night" at Stamford School last Tuesday with Mr Tranter.  We were both impressed by the year's team and concentration under pressure.

We are reviewing our registration procedures in the morning and afternoon and respectfully remind parents that if your child arrives after 9am, then please register your child at the school office.  Thank you.

Junior exam week approaches (w/b 13th May) and we want all our Junior children to do the best they can in exam week.  We are revising in class and the children should now know their exam timetable.  The children are being given support and advice as to how to prepare for their tests.  Please support your child with encouragement and a little revision.  Exams are part of school life and some preparation, plenty of sleep and a good breakfast should help all our children be prepared for the week.  Sport and music lessons will continue as normal.

We wish our exchange students an enjoyable visit to Udine this weekend.

Kinds regards

Mrs K.A Korcz

Little Genius Quiz
Little Genius Quiz at Stamford

This week four children from Year 5 took part at the 'Little Genius Quiz' in Stamford. The team consisting of Tozivaishe, Charlie, Phoebe and Leila represented the school extremely well showing excellent skills under pressure. The team came 10th out of 20 missing out qualifying for the final round by just 2 points! They should all be very proud of their efforts. Well done!

Charlie: 'It was tricky but very, very fun'
Tozivaishe: 'I am proud to have represented my school and family'
Leila: 'It was amazing to be there!'
Phoebe: 'It was wonderful but very tricky'
NSPCC - Speak out. Stay Safe

NSPCC - Speak out. Stay safe.

The Infant department enjoyed an informative and exciting assembly regarding ‘keeping children safe’. The assembly was powerful as it dealt with some important issues and problems that children might face. In addition, the visitor told us what to do if we feel at risk and indicators of abuse.

We loved meeting the mascot and learnt a great deal! Thank you to the NSPCC.

Year 2
Family Shields

During the Grantham Prep. Open Morning, Class Two were defending their family name and honour!

The children had to create a shield that detailed: Family members; what we’re good at; what we like; and, what we need to improve. After that, they were tasked with decorating and personalising them.

I think you will all agree that the shields look superb. Defend what you believe in!

TGPS Invitation Gala

In the last 15 years of hosting this gala, our own name has unfortunately never appeared on the winner's trophy. The medals we give out to the top three in each race have usually gone to our invited guests with the odd exception. Not this year folks!

From 16 races our A Team won 13 races, were second in two and third in another. Two school records were established and the trophy was unsurprisingly ours. Fabulous. Congratulations to both the A and B team swimmers who performed extremely competitively and looked hungry for success. Orla established another U11 Girls Backstroke record in a time of 17.40 sec and the U11 Medley Relay team (Orla, Joshua, Elijah and Martha) also broke a long standing record set at the National Championships in a time of 1.13.13 min.

The gala cannot be as successful as it is without the support and hard work from our volunteer parents who timed spectacularly throughout the sweltering heat.

Many thanks to you all.

U9 Cricket v St. Hugh’s

The U9 cricketers set off on their first competitive match of the season to Woodhall Spa to take on the challenge of our friends at St Hugh's.

On a lovely afternoon for cricket we began by winning the toss - which can be the highlight of many a Captains day and so it was to be for captain Harry. Batting first appeared to be quite a challenge for our inexperienced batsmen and the wickets soon began to tumble. Runs were scored steadily, but so too were wickets lost and at the end of a very feeble innings, we found ourselves only defending a slender  score of 31 runs from 16 overs.

Our bowlers set about their task briskly and had one or two successful catches from Milo and Jack with spirited bowling from Seth and Stanley both taking prize wickets. Unfortunately too many errors in the field from miss-fields or poor concentration allowed the opposition to streak ahead with 60 runs to their name and a defeat by 29 runs.

Plenty of work at break time, lunchtime and after school is now needed to improve things before our next match. Inspiration from our older children to lead the way at break times is called for to avoid another repeat of our below par performance today.

U9 Tennis mini tournament at Grantham Tennis Club

The Under 9 tennis squad partook in a mini tournament against Allington and St. Mary’s Primary Schools on Wednesday 1st May.

The teams played their individual games and the overall scores were added together. Grantham finished in joint first position with Allington.

This tournament was held at the Grantham Tennis club, in their fantastic indoor facility.

The next round (the finals!),  will take place on Wednesday 22nd May

Well done to everyone who played.

Music
Hello

Hi everyone, I'm Mrs Bradley and I am helping Ms Cozens out this half term in music lessons.  Everyone will be looking at pulse and simple rhythms, improvising, recognising, reading and playing them.  This should support the work Ms Cozens is doing and helping instrumentalists with their rhythmic reading.

I hope you enjoy the songs they bring home with them!

News from IES/SEK Schools
From the German Classroom.
'Karneval'

We recently discussed the question “Wo wohnst du?” (Where do you live?) with the Year 5 and 6 students and were introduced to some children living all over Germany.

The children in Köln (Cologne) have recently celebrated carnival. Carnival time in Germany is one of the most popular traditions celebrated across Germany. It is known as ‘Karneval’, ‘Fasching’ and ‘Fastnacht’, depending on the region. It begins officially on the 11th November at 11:11 am in Cologne and lasts until “Ash Wednesday” the following year. Around this time, a few weeks before Easter, the processions and parties also welcome the spring and celebrate the end of a long, cold winter.

These processions include dressing up in costumes and a having decorative floats that go through the towns with lots of music and dancing.  Everyone is on the street and the children especially enjoy all the sweets that are handed out during the parade. ‘Krapfen/Berliner’ (jam doughnuts) are a typical food enjoyed especially at the carnival time.

We decided to celebrate the ‘Karneval’ with our own party in class by adding some masks and other props and singing a modern carnival party song called ‘das Fliegerlied’ (The aeroplane song). The year 5 and 6 students were easily able to learn the words to the song and enthusiastically took part in doing the actions. For a little moment we felt like we were a part of the Carnival fever happening in Germany.

FIELD TRIP TO GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Did you know that In 1978 UNESCO designated Galapagos as the first World Heritage site? A World Heritage site is a landmark or area which is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as having cultural, historic, scientific or other forms of significance, and is legally protected by international treaties.
Our 7th graders kids visited these beautiful islands and learned a lot about them. Students had contact with animals in amazing places such as: La Lobería, Las Grietas, Tortuga Bay, El Junco, El Puerto Chino, La Galapaguera and many other places.
After one week sharing time with nature and great friends, they came back to the city willing to see these impressive islands again.
