VSAA students earn arts awards

Pictured above from left: Jazy LiDrazzah, Christian Ramirez and Principal Lori Rotherham
Three students at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics were recognized for their outstanding artistic talent in two competitions.

Junior
Christian Ramirez, a double bass player, won a merit award in the 2019 YoungArts national competition sponsored by the National YoungArts Foundation. Ramirez is one of 710 winners who were selected from nearly 7,000 submissions from across the United States. Ramirez was recognized in the jazz category.

Jazy LiDrazzah, a sophomore at VSAA, received an Outstanding Interpretation in the photography category in the high school division of the
Washington State Parent Teacher Association’s 2018-19 Reflections cultural arts competition.

Senior Adrienne Paulu, a VSAA senior, received an Outstanding Interpretation in the dance choreography category in the high school division of the state Reflections competition. Paulu also was one of 20 students in the nation to earn an Award of Merit in the
national competition.

Pulling out all the stops

Amidst the morning bustle before the bell rings, safety patrollers in their neon-colored vests are an essential part of starting the school day off right. Students and staff members take on the important task of ushering pedestrians across streets. Their presence is a reminder to motorists to slow down and proceed with caution.

Crossing guard duties may be the most recognizable of a safety patroller’s responsibilities, but it’s far from the only one. For Audra Findley, a fifth grader at Lincoln Elementary, being in the safety patrol also is about making people feel welcome at her school. When she’s not stationed at an intersection, she greets people near the library in the morning and helps direct the school’s kindergartners before and after school.

Go inside Ogden Elementary under construction

It's not done yet, but the new Ogden Elementary School is taking shape, and we have a tour of the new building.

Say goodbye to Ogden

When school ends this year on June 19, Ogden students and staff will go home for the summer. But they won't be returning to the 46-year-old school in the fall. They'll start the 2019-20 school year in their new school (watch video above).

Current and former students, parents and staff and community members are invited to say goodbye to Ogden on Thursday, June 6, at an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorabilia and photos will be on display in the media center. There is no formal program.

Closing Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary

Students, families, friends and alumni came together at the closing activity and carnival at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School on May 18. The carnival, organized by the Parent Teacher Organization, featured games, student performances and entertainment including a mariachi band and Ballet Folklorico. A slide show and photos and news articles featured nearly five decades of King people and memories.

King staff and students will occupy the old Ogden school during the 2019-20 school year as their building is demolished to make room for construction. The new school is projected to open in fall 2020.

A groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction of the new King Elementary School is scheduled for Friday, June 14, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at the school. The public is invited.

The X factor

The Skyview High School StormBots’ sport is a high-octane competition where students design, create and control cutting-edge robots that race against the clock to complete challenges. The team sometimes hears certain things about what they do.

Some people think only programmers can participate, or that the team is only for students in the school’s Science, Math and Technology program. Or that there are no girls are on the team.

Those things are false.
