You will find here below some calls for proposals that may interest you. The calls are organised by topic when possible, with the indication of the concerned scientific areas.
Please note that for H2020 calls, you can always make an expertise offer in the Programme’s Partner Search Tool in order to participate and contribute to projects being promoted by other organisations. 
Even for other funding schemes, we can always assist in looking for projects being promoted by other entities. In this case, please contact the BRU-IUL Office for how to proceed.

European Neighbourhood Instrument – Cross-Border Cooperation Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme 2014-2020
  • Application period: open until 3rd July 2019 (12h00)
  • Funding: minimum of 2.5 million EUR and maximum of 3.5 million EUR 
  • Priority Areas - Strategic Projects:
  • Business and SMEs development   
  • Support to education, research, technological development and innovation (transfer and commercialisation of research results)
  • Promotion of social inclusion and fight against poverty (provide youths and women with marketable skills)

 PT2020: Mobilising Programmes – Competitiveness Cluster and Other Collective Dynamics
  • Application period: open until 31st July 2019
  • Funding: between 3-10 million EUR for projects of 36 months 
  • Consortium: Applications should demonstrate that the consortium is comprehensive, including all relevant stakeholders and all the value chain; principal promoter must be a company; maximum of 25 partners

H2020: FET Proactive: emerging paradigms and communities
  • Application period: open until 3rd September 2019
  • Research and Innovation Action: min. of 3 legal entities from 3 different countries
  • Recommended overall budget per project:  up to 4 million EUR (minimum of 13 projects expected to be funded under this call)
  • Sub-topics:
    1. Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence: Machine-learning algorithms are difficult to understand, opaque and may have implicit biases in their decision-making. Explicability has become an essential element if users are to trust, accept and adopt the next generation of intelligent machines on a wider scale. This initiative seeks to advance to the next AI frontier with verifiable, evidence-based features of trustworthiness (i.e., reliable and unbiased alignment of values, goals and beliefs) and transparency (explainable performance), exploring radically new approaches (e.g., inspired from neuro-science, cognition or social science).

Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage and Global Change (JPI CH) – Conservation, Protection and Use Call
  • Application period: open until 3rd September 2019
  • The call will include four main topics (interdisciplinary approach):
    1. Topic one: Analysing and modelling change (including data science and heritage management)
    2. Topic two: Sustainable protection and enhancement of values (including value creation through the sustainable use of cultural heritage)
    3. Topic three: Management of cultural heritage at risk
    4. Topic four: Layered conservation

COST Actions (European Cooperation in Science and Technology)
  • Open Call: next collection date 5th September 2019
  • Funding for networking actions in any topic (around EUR 130,000 per annum)meetings, training schools, short-term scientific missions
  • COST Actions are bottom-up networks with a duration of four years that boost research, innovation and careers.

LIFE Climate Action – 2019 Call for “Traditional Projects”
  • Application period: open until 12th September 2019
  • Funding: no fixed amount for budgets, but it seems the LIFE programme funds projects within the range of 1M€-5M€; co-funding rate is only 55%of total eligible costs
  • Project duration: usually between 2-5 years
  • Priority areas:
    1. Climate Change Mitigation
    2. Climate Change Adaptation
    3. Climate Governance and Information

PhD Students and Early Career Academics Research Grant Programme – The Olympic Studies Centre
  • Application period: open until 27th September 2019
  • Funding: maximum of 8000 USD
  • Call objective: encourage PhD Students and Early Career Academics in their research with a humanities or social sciences perspective on any aspect of the Olympic phenomenon

2nd Call for Joint Project Proposals FCT – Aga Khan Development Network
  • Application period: open until 30th September 2019
  • Funding: maximum 250 000 € for up to 36 months
  • Call objective: open new collaborative research projects between Portuguese, African Countries and AKDN research and academic institutions that can have a meaningful impact in consolidating research capacity in Africa.
  • Call topics: 
    • All scientific topics encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration - topics should emphasize emerging issues under the quality of life concept: food security, biodiversity, early childhood, habitat, sustainable energy systems and urban development, poverty alleviation, resettlement of migrants, civil society, among others…
    • Specific proposals fostering research on the Portuguese archives of Indian Ocean migration and trade
    • Translational and clinical medical research

EEA Grants Portugal – Fund for Bilateral Relations Call #1
  • Application period: open until 31st December 2020
  • Funding: between 5000-15000 € (up to 90% of eligible costs) for projects between Portugal and the Donor Countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)
  • Eligible activities:
    • matchmaking events; 
    • technical cooperation and exchange of experts; short-term internships; training actions;
    • workshops and seminars on topics of common interest; 
    • study and field visits; collection of data, reports, studies and publications, campaigns and exhibitions, etc.

  • Application period: 22ndJuly 2019
  • Co-financing rate: max. 90% of eligible costs; projects up to 24 months
  • Recommended overall budget per project:  minimum 200 000 EUR (up to 35 projects expected to be funded under this call)
  • Type of eligible actions:
    • training actions, manuals and any other type of outreach activities, exchange of information and of good practices involving workers' and/or employers' representatives, with a focus on activities generating a lasting effect;
    • analysis of quantitative and qualitative aspects and results on subjects related to workers' and employers' representation and social dialogue at undertaking level in a transnational cooperation context and enhanced collaboration and pro-activity of stakeholders in the anticipation of / response to change and restructuring activities and to changes in work organisation, business/production models and forms of work;

    • Trade and Investment: activities which support the expansion of U.S. exports and investments, improve the connections between U.S. and Portuguese businesses, and/or expand economic opportunities for women and underserved populations.
