Watch for a new book by Assistant Professor David Pettincchio of the Department of Sociology later this summer. Politics of Empowerment: Disability Rights and the Cycle of American Policy Reformexamines the evolution of American disability policy and disability rights. Drawing on extensive archival material, Pettinicchio redefines the relationship between grassroots advocacy and institutional politics, revealing a cycle of progress and backlash embedded in the American political system.
AWARDS & HONOURS
Paul Piunno is one of two U of T professors to be awarded the 2019 President’s Teaching Award, which recognizes sustained excellence in teaching, research in teaching and the integration of teaching and research. Piunno, an associate professor, teaching stream with the Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences, was lauded for his innovative approach to education, such as the Advanced Interdisciplinary Research Laboratory (AIRLab) course which introduces undergraduate science students to interdisciplinary research.

CBC News covered a project co-curated by associate professor of biology Fiona Rawle that honours Canadian women working in STEM fields.
