Plans approved for Stirk Park
The transformation of Stirk Park moved into a new phase last month, as plans for the new nature play space at Stirk park were adopted by Council on Tuesday 26 April.
A key feature of the design is the use of nature play elements comprising of timber and natural materials for major play equipment rather than traditional painted metal and plastic equipment. This is more in keeping with being environmentally friendly and complements the natural surrounds of Stirk Park.
The plans for the park include a half sized basketball court, exercise equipment, flying fox, picnic facilities: BBQs, bench seating and shade shelters, a new toilet block, a viewing platform with arbour, and a historic bridge.
There will be a new junior play area complete with water fountain and sand play zones, a timber arbour meeting place, board walk, rope walk, shop front, zig zag climber and animal and human tracks telling a Dreamtime Story.
The plans also cater for youth, with a zig zag boardwalk, triple swing, thread chimes, talking tube, school tiled pathway, double flying fox with all abilities seat, and a possum hangout.
The project has been led by the community, with the recent adoption by Council coming after extensive community consultation was undertaken to develop both the Stirk Park Master Plan in 2018 and the concept designs in 2020.
The $3.8M project will be funded from a combination of sources including grants from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and Lotterywest, as well as a contribution from the Rotary Club of Kalamunda.

Walliston Primary Students get Hands-on Conservation Experience
Students at Walliston Primary School were treated to a visit from Simon Cherriman and Danielle Crichton from Re-cyc-ology this term to install a cockatube, donated by the City of Kalamunda, in one of the school’s Marri trees.
The event, at which students learned about cockatoos, the impacts of deforestation, and how artificial hollows can help native fauna to establish nesting spaces, was facilitated through the City of Kalamunda’s Adopt-A-Patch program.
Cockatubes replicate the natural breeding habitat for Carnaby’s Cockatoos and have proven a successful way to improve breeding numbers for the endangered birds.
The space near to the new nesting box is being revegetated and students will have opportunities to begin looking after the patch of bush through the City of Kalamunda’s Adopt-A-Patch program.

Storm preparedness
Dangerous storms are the most common natural hazard in Australia. Every year from May to October, storms including tornados, lightning, hail, flash flooding and gale force winds cause major destruction to the southern half of WA.
As storms are unpredictable and generally impact a small area, their devastating impact is often underestimated.
Storms not only cause damage to homes, property and businesses, they also pose a threat to people, animals and the environment.
⛈️⚡ Storms can be dangerous, unpredictable and escalate quickly. Are you ready for storm season? The SES is available 24/7 so you don't have to do those risky jobs yourself. Need emergency help - call the SES!
⛈️⚡ Storm damage to homes and property is usually caused by loose and broken roof materials, fallen trees and branches and flooding from blocked gutters and downpipes.
🧰🔨👍 Preparing your family and property for storms is your responsibility. Make it a priority and get your home ready inside and out.
