'Not a time for stigmatization': Concerns about health messaging during monkeypox outbreak
Dan Gregson
After Alberta recorded its second case of monkeypox, a recent tweet from Dr. Deena Hinshaw generated a lot of negative reaction with fears that the outbreak could end up stigmatizing the 2SLGBTQ+ community. It can be a delicate balance for health officials, as experts say there is no intention to try and target a specific community. “It’s not to stigmatize a given population, it’s to alert a given population that they may be at higher risk,” said UofC infectious disease expert Dr. Dan Gregson. Fewer farmers in Alberta 2021, but number of women increasing: StatsCan
Ellen Goddard
The 2021 agriculture census data was released last month, and although there are fewer farmers in Alberta compared to previous years, the proportion of female farmers has grown over the past 20 years. In 2001, females made up about 28 per cent of all Alberta farmers. Now about one in every three farmers is a woman. Women, historically, have worked in farming in various ways, but the increase suggests more women are being recognized for their role, said Dr. Ellen Goddard, agricultural economist at the UofA.
