PES Women Statutory members convene at start of Czech Presidency

1 July 2022

PES Women Statutory met online and discussed women’s rights worldwide: the backtrack on reproductive rights in EU and US is worrisome and we condemn the decision by the US Supreme Court on abortion.

Upcoming activities were prepared, including PES Women Annual Conference at the PES Congress next October in Berlin. Communication on this meeting here.

Upending Roe vs Wade threatens women’s rights in the US and all over the world

The PES and PES Women strongly condemn the United States Supreme Court decision to upend Roe vs Wade, and consequently women’s right to exercise their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Earlier the same week, progressive forces in the Polish parliament - led by Nova Lewica - put forward a bill to allow and extend access to abortion in Poland.

PES Women and Nova Lewica host Twitter Spaces Debate: Our Bodies, Our Rights

On 17 June, PES Women and Nova Lewica hosted a Twitter Spaces debate on abortion in the US and the EU. Speakers discussed the implications of banning the right to an abortion for women's rights and bodily autonomy across the globe.

Speakers included PES Women President Zita Gurmai; Wanda Nowicka and Katarzyna Kotula from member party Nova Lewica; Maria Noichl, MEP and S&D Coordinator in FEMM; Ellen O’Sullivan, Chair of Irish Labour Women; Gillian Kane, Senior Advisor at IPAS; and Natalia Broniarczyk and Justyna Wydrzynska From Abortion Dream Team.

PES Women marks International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict

19 June 2022

PES Women marked International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. Rape as a war weapon is a violation of international human rights laws, but it still occurs in every conflict. PES Women advocates for this atrocity to stop and all criminals must be accountable, in Ukraine and beyond.

PES Women puts gender lense on PES thematic Networks

June - July 2022

PES Women has participated in several PES Networks and activities in June and July 2022: Vice-President Mija Javornik in the Financial and Economic Network (FEN) on 14/06; Vice-President Zefi Dimadama in the PES Statues Committee; Vice-President Marja Bijl in the Migration Network on 20/06, which was World Refugee Day.
