Juneteenth Celebration - July 17th, 2022
On Friday, June 17, 2022, The Office of Minority Educational Development within Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, along with Student Diversity Programs in the Division of Student Engagement and Well-Being, hosted their second annual Georgia Tech Juneteenth celebration.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19, 1865  that Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official on January 1, 1863.

This year’s celebration presented attendees with an opportunity to learn, reflect, and observe the importance Juneteenth holds for this country and for the African American community.

S. Gordon Moore, Jr., Executive Director of the Center for Student Diversity, and Inclusion provided opening remarks to begin the Juneteenth celebration.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Damon Williams, delivered a presentation titled, “Juneteenth and Imposter Syndrome”, which drew connections between slavery and Imposter Syndrome.

Later that afternoon, at the GT Connector, attendees enjoyed food, music, entertainment while interacting with campus partners.

Challenge 2022

On Saturday, June 25th, 2022, the Office of Minority and Educational Development welcomed 146 students and their parents to the Georgia Tech campus to participate in this year’s Challenge Program.

Challenge is Georgia Tech's premiere and signature 5-week summer residential program for academic advancement, professional development, and cultural exploration. In Challenge, students are immersed in the Georgia Tech environment: they live in on-campus housing, take classes provided by Georgia Tech professors, and participate in cultural, professional, and academic workshops and activities.

During Opening Day, students and parents interacted with Challenge counselors, OMED staff, and faculty that the students will be interacting with for the next five weeks.

GT alums, and previous Challenge participants who are current employees at The Home Depot and Procter and Gamble, participated in Opening Day. These current corporate partners engaged and networked with the students while providing them with swag, products, and insight.

Stanford Prism
PRISM Application Open NOW to July 18th!

What Exactly Is Stanford PRISM?
PRISM (Postdoctoral Recruitment Initiative in Science and Medicine) is an opportunity for late-stage graduate students from broadly diverse backgrounds (and all schools/research interests) to explore postdoctoral training at Stanford. PRISM provides an opportunity to interview with faculty mentors, get the inside scoop on postdoctoral training/lab environments at Stanford from current postdocs, and access professional development to score the best possible postdoc match!

The purpose of this program is to encourage those students who might not otherwise consider a postdoctoral position at Stanford. PRISM allows guests to get a first-hand look at whether this institution and its campus community might truly be a good fit for their needs. Our goal is to match trainees from institutions and organizations across the country with excellent mentors here at Stanford!

Fall 2022 - OHI/OMED Events

Save the Date: August 25th, 2022

Latino Welcome Celebration - At the start of fall semester, the Latino Welcome Celebration provides incoming and current Hispanic/Latino students with an opportunity to experience the Hispanic atmosphere at Georgia Tech. This event helps new students’ network with other students, faculty, staff, and corporate representatives, providing an easier transition into college and thereby increasing their chance for success. All are welcome to attend!

This event takes place in the morning and mid-afternoon!

OMED Carnival - Each August OMED hosts a Carnival to welcome new and current students. While enjoying food, fun, and music, students have the opportunity to engage OMED Academic Support staff,  Edge leaders, student organizations, and others to help them quickly gain a diverse academic and social network.

This event takes place in the evening!

One of CSDI's long time corporate partners, British Petroleum, or bp, will be participating in both events.

At the Latino Welcome Celebration and the OMED Carnival representatives from bp will be tabling throughout the event giving away swag and answering any questions you might have about their organization.

This isn’t the bp you think you know. They are committed to changing the landscape of the energy industry and they need individuals like you to make that goal happen! Come learn what majors they are looking for that can thrive, grow, and contribute within an organization like bp!
