How the United Church got into the business of residential schools
"The churches were addicted to the funding and prestige of government support"

by Rev David Kim-Cragg | August 3, 2022

In this week's Broadview linked below is a story explaining how the United Church got involved in the residential schools. Remarkably, it started on July 17, 1849. It initially began with positivity and good intentions. But, it deteriorated to what we know now due to many factors including government underfunding and greed. The United Church inherited these from the Methodists and Congregationalists when it was formed in 1925. Post WWII, it took over 2 decades for the United Church to close its last church. It took more than 40 years before it began to apologize.

Rev. David Kim-Cragg is a minister at St. Matthew’s United in Richmond Hill, Ont.
Vanessa Kennedy, who served as a sensitivity reader for this article, is an Indigenous consultant in Hillsdale, Ont.
This story first appeared in Broadview’s September 2022 issue with the title “A betrayal of trust.

Land Acknowledgement (All)
We acknowledge this land on which Ebenezer United Church serves our community. For thousands of years, this land has been on the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to worship, pray, and practice our faith on this land.

Affirmation of Faith: (In Unison)  “A New Creed” VU #: 918
We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us.
We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

Call to Worship: (Responsive) (Please stand as you are able)
Minister: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
                 and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
People: And also, with you.

Minister: The sacrifice that honours God is a thankful heart.
People:  We lift up our hearts with gratitude and our voices
                 with praise for all that God has done.

Minister: The eye of the Lord is on those who fear him;
                 on those who hope in God’s steadfast love.
All:           Our soul waits for the Lord who is our help and shield.
                 We trust in God’s holy name and so we come to worship.

Lighting of the Christ Candle & Fellowship Candles
(Lighting by Gabrielle Forrester, reading by Valerie Panisales)

The Christ Candle is a sign to us that Jesus Christ has come into this world as the Eternal Light. The Fellowship Candles remind us that Jesus’ people are the people of Light in this world. As we light the Christ Candle, let us hear the voice of Jesus say, “I am the Light of the World.” And, as we light the Fellowship Candles, let us also hear the voice of Jesus say, “You are the light of the world.”

Hymn of Praise: “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name” VU #: 334

Prayers of Adoration & Invocation: (Together) (Please be seated)
Faithful God, we gather at your call to worship you. We join our prayers with all those who have gone before us in faith: those who struggled to know you and follow you, those who relied on you to guide them through life, and those whose examples inform our lives as your disciples today. Thank you, O God, for your goodness to us over all these generations and for your guiding presence still with us on our journeys. May our offerings of praise and thanksgiving be pleasing to you, as we worship you this day. O Lord our God: send your Holy Spirit to deposit in us the gift of faith that possessed the Apostles, that we might claim it as our own as we walk with you. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen!

Prayer of Confession: (Responsive)
Minister: God of mercy, we confess that we are not always ready
                 to do what you call us to do.
People:  Afraid and uncertain, we store up treasures for our
                 own security and hesitate when you call us to act.

Minister: Being selfish, we look after ourselves first,
                 while putting your mission in second place.
All:         Forgive us and give us the readiness to serve, so that we live in faithful service, bringing glory, honour, and praise to your name all of our days. Through Christ, we pray, amen.

Assurance of Pardon
Minister:         Beloved in the Lord, this is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance: “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbour his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For, as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” To all who turn to the Lord then, he says, “your sins are forgiven.” He also says, “Follow me.”
All: Thanks be to God!

The Lord’s Prayer: (Sung Together) VU #: 959

(Children are welcome to go with Diane McLean to the Heritage Hall for a Sunday School program.)

Prayer for Understanding (read by Rev. Forrester)
O Lord, you speak to us through the teaching of the Law and the Prophets, and through your Word made flesh in Jesus Christ. Help us to listen when you challenge us and call us to change. Help us listen when you assure us of your love despite our failings. Help us listen for your living Word, so, that by your Spirit, we may be transformed into your faithful disciples. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Risen Lord, we pray, amen.

Scripture Readings (read by Valerie Panisales)

Old Testament: Isaiah 1:1, 10–20 (New International Version)
1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. 10 Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 11 “The multitude of your sacrifices—what are they to me?” says the Lord.
“I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations— I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.14 Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being.
They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.
15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood! 16 Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. 17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless;
plead the case of the widow. 18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land;
20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.”
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

New Testament: Luke 12:32–40 (New International Version)
32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks, they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

Reader:  This is the word of the Lord!
All:           Thanks be to God!
Sermon
"Preparing to Meet God"
Ebenezer United Church
Isaiah 1:1, 10–20 & Luke 12:32–40
(NIV) | August 07, 2022
Rev. Nicholas Forrester
Hymn of Reflection: “I Need Thee Every Hour” VU #: 671

Prayers of Thanksgiving, Intercession, and Supplication:
Minister: Living God, we give you thanks for life and breath to follow you all our days. We thank you for the gift of faith that gives us courage when things are difficult, and for the encouragement we receive from the faith of others along the way. Inspire us with your Spirit to remain loyal to you as our Source of life and hope.
People: Faithful God, we thank you because even when we cannot see the path ahead, you keep on guiding us. Thank you, that even when we cannot see a solution, you show us a way through our challenges. Thank you that our faith in you comes as a pure gift, something we can trust rather than figure out on our own. Renew our faith by your grace this day.

Minister:         And so, we pray for those who wonder if their faith is strong enough: for those who are afraid of the future they face. Give them courage to listen for your call and follow your leading.
People: We pray for those who doubt. Give them courage to explore those doubts and questions and discover renewed trust in your promises. We pray for those who are impatient. Bless their waiting and fill them with hope.

Minister:         We pray for those who have chosen the wrong path. Turn their hearts towards you and lead them in ways of faith, righteousness, holiness, love, justice, and peace. Give them strength to follow you.
All:      We pray for your Church, O God, facing new challenges in mission to reach out to the world around us. Give us the courage and the wisdom to meet the challenges, and the faithfulness to follow you into the future you hold in your hands. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray, amen!

Invitation to the Offering (read by Rev. Forrester)
The sacrifice that honours God is a thankful heart. Therefore, let us present our offerings with thankful hearts, grateful for all God’s goodness to us.

Offering Our Gifts & Offertory Hymn: “Grant Us, God, the Grace” VU #: 540

Prayer of Dedication (read by Rev. Forrester)
Blessed are you, O God of all creation. Through your goodness and your bounty, we have these gifts to share. Bless and use our offerings for your glory. Give us the courage to offer ourselves fully to you, trusting that you will guide us on our journeys of faith, wherever we are. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen!

Prayers of the People: Rev. Nicholas Forrester

Celebrating the Sacrament of Holy Communion
At the last supper, Jesus served his disciples,
and they ate and drank first.  This was to fill them spiritually so
that they could then go out and serve others.
That is what we do now.

INVITATION (Rev. Forrester)
Let us celebrate this joyful feast. People will come from east and west and north and south and all will find a place at the Lord’s table. Beloved in the Lord, draw near to the holy table of our Lord Jesus Christ and hear his gracious words:

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NRSV)

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty…. and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away” (John 6:35, 37, NRSV)

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6, NRSV)

PRAYER (Responsive)
Minister: The Lord be with you.
People:  And also, with you.
Minister: Lift up your hearts.
People:  We lift them to the Lord.
Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People:  It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Minister:         It is our highest joy to praise you, God of enduring love.  All that is good and beautiful, all that is just and true, is your doing.  Morning by morning, you whispered your dreams and hopes into our hearts.
People: Holy God, we praise you.
                 Let the heavens be joyful, and the earth be glad.

Minister: We bless you for creating the whole world, for your promises to your people Israel, and for Jesus Christ in whom your fullness dwells.
People:  Born of Mary, he shares our life. Eating with sinners,
                 he welcomes us. Guiding the children, he leads us.

Minister: Visiting the sick, he heals us.
                 Dying on the cross, he saves us.
People:  Raised from the dead, he gives new life.
                 Living with you, he prays for us.

Minister: Unite us in faith, encourage us with hope, inspire us to love, that we may serve as your faithful disciples until we feast at your table in glory.
All:      Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your Holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!

NARRATIVE OF THE INSTITUTION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
Minister: As we gather at the Lord’s table, let us again hear the narrative of the institution of the Lord’s Supper as it was recorded and delivered by the Apostle Paul: ‘I have received of the Lord that also which I deliver unto you; that the Lord Jesus, the same in which he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “Take, eat, this is my body which has been broken for you, this do in remembrance of me.” And after the same manner he took the cup and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, this do you as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you do proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.’

THE MYSTERY OF OUR FAITH
Minister: Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith:
All: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again!

PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING AND CONSECRATION
Minister: Almighty God and our heavenly Father, we recognize that it is meet, right and our bounden duty that at all times and in all places, we should give you thanks, Father, Almighty, Creator of the heavens and the earth. We join with the angels and the company of heaven in proclaiming: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God Almighty; heaven and earth are full of your glory. Glory be to you, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. We give you thanks for the incarnation of your Son, Jesus Christ; for his life and ministry on earth; for his suffering and death on the cross;
for his glorious resurrection from the dead; for his ascension into heaven; and for the promise of his coming again. We therefore present ourselves to be living sacrifices unto you; holy and pleasing in your sight, which is our reasonable act of service. Send down your Holy Spirit to sanctify us, and present us once again faultless before your throne of grace with exceedingly great joy.
Almighty God, King of the universe – you who bring forth bread from the earth and wine from the vine, send down your Holy Spirit to sanctify this bread and this wine, which we set before you that the bread may be for us the body of Christ and the cup of blessing the blood of Christ. Amen!

THE RE-ENACTMENT  Rev. Nicholas Forrester

AGNUS DEI
Minister: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world;
All:           Have mercy upon us.
Minister: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world;
All:           Have mercy upon us.
Minister: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world;
All:           Grant us your peace.
(Let us be silent as we contemplate this holy and solemn act of worship)

THE SHARING OF THE BREAD AND THE WINE
(The Communion Servers will proceed to the altar and be served first by the Minister, then the congregation will come forward to be served. Those who are unable to walk may remain seated and the Servers will come to you. The Minister will partake last.)

This is the body of Christ which was broken for you. This do in remembrance of him.

This cup the New Covenant in the blood of Christ, shed for all for the forgiveness of sins. Drink ye all of it in remembrance of him.

PASSING OF THE PEACE
Minister: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
People:  And also, with you.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER
Minister: Let us pray,
All:      Gracious and loving God, we give you thanks for the invitation to your table. For there, we have tasted your death and seen your resurrection; we have feasted at your table and have been filled with unending life. May we now return to the duties, which await us in the world, ever more resolved to be faithful to you and loving to one another. Through Jesus Christ who reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen!

Closing Hymn: “All the Way My Saviour Leads Me” VU #: 635

Benediction for All: (Please stand as you are able)
Minister: I pray that, according to the riches of (God’s) glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. God be with you, my friends. Amen.
