When and where was the first time you saw Vanguard?
I first saw Vanguard perform at Citrus college in Southern California in 1997. At the time, I was a young kid performing with the Spirit of Santa Fe Springs. Say what you will about early season in 1997, but it was magical experience for this future performer.
Best drum corps hack:
Find a bus partner that prefers to sleep on the floor (thanks Alexis and Sam).
If you were to have marched in any other section in the corps, what would it be?
It absolutely would have been the colorguard.
Best way to make a PB & J sandwich:
Wheat bread, strawberry preserves, crunchy PB, AND all sandwiched around a Miss Amana brownie. Literally the best thing when brownies were on the menu.
What is your fondest Vanguard memory?
During my age-out season in 2004, I basically couldn't play Clowns without getting teary. At some point during that season, the cymbal line caught on to this and would sometimes kneel in a place where they could see my face from around my mellophone bell. At least once, they quietly cheered when my waterworks started happening. Silly and random, but it still sticks with me.
How do you connect/reconnect to Vanguard?
Currently I volunteer as the president of the Alumni Association, which has been extremely rewarding so far. In past years, I have served on the VMAPA Board of Directors, have been on the SCV visual staff (2005 and 2013) and have done my fair share of bingo volunteering when I lived in the Bay Area.
