Congratulations to the Gloucestershire U18's team on winning the U18 South West County Championship this month at Salisbury and South Wilts Golf Club.

The morning round produced some fine scoring with Louis Ross (Long Ashton Golf Club) finishing one under par with a round of 70 and both Milan Reed (Long Ashton Golf Club) and Alistair Curnock (Minchinhampton Golf Club) finishing just one shot behind.

At lunch Devon led by six shots from Gloucestershire, but, throughout the afternoon round the lead was gradually whittled down and the final scores returned brought the two counties together on a tie on 727 (+17). It was a battle to the end and we took the title on the sixth card play-off.

We wish them all the best of luck as they prepare for the national finals to be played at Coxmoor Golf Club, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire next month.

A summary of the day and all the scores are available to read on the SWCGA website.

Joe Long from Lansdown Golf Club who after an outstanding amateur career, has made his first professional outing this month at the Cazoo Open on the European Tour.

Joe said "Today is a new chapter of my golf career as I make my pro debut on the European tour this week. I would just like to take this time to thank all my friends and family, England Golf, Adidas Golf, The R&A and Gloucestershire Golf Union for all the support over my amateur career to get me to the position I am in today"

Mark Powell our Under 18's Team Manager said "Another member of "The Gloucestershire Way", who we wish every happiness for a long and successful career - we will watch your professional journey Joe with pride - you will always be part of the family".

Do you have any young aspiring players in your club that could become the next Joe Long? Find out more about our coaching and development programme and how they can play at county level by visiting our website.

The English Boys Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (Carris Trophy) took place at Bristol and Clifton Golf Club last week.

Founded in 1935 by Austin Carris and adopted in 1988 by England Golf the Carris Trophy returned to Gloucestershire for the 2nd time in its history (previously at Long Ashton Golf Club in 1991).

Gloucestershire players Louis Ross and Milan Reed both from Long Ashton Golf Club made the cut to play the final 36 holes but were up against tough competition in very hot conditions.

Harley Smith from The Rayleigh Golf Club became only the second player in history to win the Carris Trophy and McGregor Trophy in the same year.

You can read the news story from the event and view the leaderboard on the England Golf website.

Applications are now open for the Engand Golf Regional Squads.

Young golfers in Gloucestershire (U18s) are invited to apply for the boys’ and girls’ regional coaching programme and DiSE program.

Applications close on the 27th August at 12pm. For more information visit the England Golf website.
