Name the parts of the boat

This weeks activity is to name the parts of the boat! We are very familiar with learning to sail in this particular boat in Tackers, the Optimist.

Try your best to remember each part. We know you can do it!

One of the most common questions we are asked is “what is the most suitable clothing for going sailing?”. To answer this, we are suggesting some considerations for choosing the right sailing gear over the next couple of weeks, as different sailing disciplines may require you to have different clothing. It is important to remember that should not need to buy a full new wardrobe to go sailing!

DINGHY SAILING

Sailing a dinghy or windsurfer will expose you to the wind and water more than other disciplines of sailing, which is why you should be comfortable and warm in clothing that can get wet.

Stay Warm

Layering is key! First you should choose a good base layer, such as wetsuit pants and a top (or ‘long john’ style wetsuits). You can adjust your layering based on the weather conditions – in cooler weather you should have a thicker base layer, but in warmer weather you may prefer a lighter rashie top. If you need more warmth, you can add additional layers like a spray top / smock.

Stay Comfortable

Loose and light clothing is always preferable so you have the freedom to move easily around the boat. Boat handling requires lots of movement, so restrictive clothing can make this difficult.

What can you do to help?
The ocean and local waterways are playgrounds for sailors! The health of our ocean is an emerging subject in all forms of sailing, and the last thing we want is for plastic and other synthetic materials making their way into the water. These materials are used and discarded more than you might think around your local marina and rigging areas, so here are three reminders as to how we can reduce the risk of these entering the water.

Reduce single use plastics!

Make the switch to drink bottles, food containers and bags that are reusable. Even if you intend to dispose of plastic, the wind can very quickly blow wrappers and bottles into the water before you can catch them! You can also keep your items onboard with a rope or clip attachment.
Cut down your use of electrical tape
Electrical tape is a quick and easy solution for securing items onboard a boat, but it is not a friendly material to end up in the water. Try to reduce your use of tape to only parts of rigging that absolutely need it. Remember to collect and dispose of tape responsibly – not left in the rigging area or on the marina for it to blow into the water!

Reuse rope responsibly

The synthetic fibres in rope are a threat to marine life. Small off-cuts of rope should be discarded responsibly, and if rope is in good condition then reuse it!

Did you know? RPAYC has a Seabin, located on the Services Wharf, to collect debris and rubbish that accumulates in our marina. The Seabin is an ocean “trash skimmer” designed for marinas and yacht clubs to filter rubbish, oil and organic materials. You can learn more about the Seabin Project here.
