Tough Questions about the Drought…

OWN VOICE. ~ InPerspective by Gregg Dieguez —

Whether we are entering the worst drought in California history or not, there should be agreement that we face serious risks to a combination of water supply and the costs of that water. In the Bay Area, those risks are exacerbated by the Bay Delta Plan. Yet our Government (broadly defined) doesn’t seem to have answers for a series of tough questions. Please contribute to this dialog with your own questions and suggestions.Got Drought?

San Mateo County Harbor District Phases Out Dangerous Private Mooring Balls in Pillar Point Harbor

VIDEO. From the San Mateo County Harbor District meeting on 7/21/21 by Zoom.

Historically, the District has allowed individuals to obtain permits to install private use mooring balls attached to permittees’ own permanent anchors (Chapter 3.15 Mooring Regulations of the District Ordinance Code). The private installation of the mooring anchors was not regulated, and as a result, many permittees have used heavy items, such as car engines and concrete blocks as anchors. Since these private mooring balls are not professionally installed or regularly maintained, boats tied to them often detach during storms. This has led to boats breaking free and wrecking on shore or damaging other moored boats.

Thursday, August 5, Sunset Piano Comes Home to Main Street Half Moon Bay

In collaboration with the Sunset Piano project, Make It Main Street presents “Main Street Piano” Thursday August 5 through Sunday 8th. Sunset Piano was founded in Half Moon Bay in 2013 by Coastside resident Mauro Ffortissimo and coconspirator Dean Mermell. Its subversive origins were celebrated in the documentary film Twelve Pianos, and in 2015 it evolved to become the annual phenomenon of Flower Piano at the San Francisco Botanical Gardens.

The pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 springtime event and challenged the creators, performers and fans to find new ways to connect and create. As the community emerged from the restraints, Ffortissimo and his Coastside collaborators found a way to reinvent this public performance art yet again. Sunset Piano returns to its Half Moon Bay roots as has  “Main Street Piano”, the centering feature of August’s “Make It Main Street”.

City of Half Moon Bay’s Building Electrification Workshop; Gas Equals 80% of Building Emissions

According to most recent data, 48% of the greenhouse gas emissions generated in Half Moon Bay come from energy use in buildings, with 80% of those emissions coming from natural gas and propane-powered energy.

To help curb these emissions and work toward a cleaner environment, the City is proposing an ordinance that would require all new construction be electric-only buildings, and would phase out fuel gas applications and distribution in existing buildings by 2045.

You’re invited to join City Staff along with Peninsula Clean Energy and The Half Moon Bay Chamber of Commerce on August 12 at 2 pm to learn more about Half Moon Bay’s proposed building electrification ordinance.

POST Presents: San Mateo County Planning for People and Nature at Tunitas Creek Beach

Join us to learn about the past, present and future of Tunitas Creek Beach, soon to be the newest publicly accessible beach on the San Mateo Coast!

Between Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, there is a 1-mile stretch of beach that has been known to many Bay Area residents as a local treasure for surfers, fishermen and recreational users. Starting in the mid 2010s, large-scale campouts and parties began causing environmental and safety issues.  In 2017 Peninsula Open Space Trust bought 58 acres of private bluff fronting Tunitas Creek Beach and transferred this land to San Mateo County Parks. Since then, San Mateo County Parks, POST and many community stakeholders have been working to draft plans that incorporate a variety of community needs into a park design that will provide space for the diverse people, plants and animals of our area.
