Welcome to Oh Scrap! from Diane at Stash Bandit:
Curated tips for better scrappy quilts!
Blues and yellows feature prominently in my latest blocks.
One of my students asked recently:
Can I put dull fabrics and bright fabrics together?
Can I use "kid colors" with reproductions?
The answer is "it depends."
If you're making a quilt with just a handful of fabrics, it's easiest to use mostly grayed-down fabrics or mostly pure colors.
But if you're making a scrap quilt, then you can absolutely mix them up. And in fact you'll get a more dynamic quilt if you use both!
These blocks were made straight from my scraps. I had several StarQuars in blue and yellow so I made a few more deliberately and voilá!
The only requirement beyond blue and yellow was that the fabrics in each StarQuar had to contrast. In other words you had to be able to clearly see the difference between the background and the foreground.
Three blocks became an autumn table runner.
This piece demonstrates that yes, you can use the bright fabrics alongside the dull ones if you're going scrappy. They play off each other and add lots of interest.
So go ahead: Mix dull fabrics and bright fabrics to your heart's content in scrap quilts!
