One Health: The origins and lineage of One Health, Part I

Justin Ancheta, Raad Fadaak, R. Michele Anholt, Danielle Julien, Herman W. Barkema, Myles Leslie

Zoonotic diseases have become a major worldwide challenge; with COVID-19 being the latest and most dramatic example of an animal-derived virus affecting humans. With COVID-19 and previous zoonotic disease epidemics, the concept of One Health has gained prominence (1). Based upon several hundred years of thinking and social development, One Health has developed a holistic, systems approach to address complex problems at the intersection of humans, animals, and the environment. This paper summarizes evolving and competing ideas underlying contemporary One Health concepts and practices. Read the full publication in the Canadian Veterinary Journal here

Medical experts worry about return of NHL in front of packed crowds

Medical experts worry about return of NHL in front of packed crowds

Daniel Gregson

While Calgary and Edmonton are both only allowing fully vaccinated fans into their rinks, medical experts are worried this will still exacerbate the already devastating fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gregson said there’s still some inherent risks here, especially when it comes to the fact kids under 12 cannot get their shots yet. “Lack of capacity in our healthcare system, particularly in our ICUs, to take care of people who become infected with COVID, that’s the concern,” said Dr. Daniel Gregson, associate professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Medicine at the University of Calgary. Click here to watch the full video.

California mandates vaccines for students, could Canada follow?

Lorian Hardcastle

Whether it’s workplaces, dining out or travelling, vaccine mandates are fast becoming the rule rather than the exception. But what about for students? California last week announced school children will need to be vaccinated. But could Canada follow suit? “The fact that these laws do exist in a couple of provinces does at least create some sort of precedent for moving in this direction,” said Lorian Hardcastle, a health law expert at the University of Calgary. Read the full article here

‘Armchair rancher’ app could help beef producers make smart business decisions based on data

‘Armchair rancher’ app could help beef producers make smart business decisions based on data

Graham Plastow

New University of Alberta research is mixing artificial intelligence with agriculture to help cattle ranchers. An analytic “armchair rancher” mobile app is being developed to help beef producers better manage various aspects of their herds. The smart device application will aid them in making the most informed business decisions they can, by leveraging the masses of data they already collect daily on factors like herd genetics, feedlots and economics. UofA Professor David Wishart is collaborating with a team led by Graham Plastow, a professor in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, on the three-year project, which is supported by a $481,000 grant from Alberta Innovates. Read the full article here
