Grateful For . . .

Our student-athletes continue to impress me each and every day. Their ambition, their work ethic, and their commitment to others have shone especially brightly through this fall semester. Returning to demanding schedules after a significant time of reduction, or for many, for the first time, carries its own extra weight. Our student-athletes have navigated this gracefully, keeping an eye on the greater good, as the pandemic continues to affect us all in a variety of ways. It has not always been an easy task.

I’m grateful for our PERA faculty and coaches. There has been an entire slate of new demands, new perspectives and new priorities. Ultimately, they have kept the well-being of our community at the forefront of their efforts to build successful programs and classes. I am grateful for our administrative staff, support staff and sports medicine team, who have repeatedly planned, replanned and adjusted to changing information. They have strategized, over many hours, ways to provide meaningful access to opportunities while creating safer conditions for everyone involved.

I’m also grateful for our Friends of Athletics National Committee for continuing to provide energy and enthusiasm to our program through a challenging time and for the College administration, President Paula A. Johnson and Provost Andrew Shennan for their prompt attention to (many) questions and their unyielding commitment to health and safety on campus.

Finally, I’m grateful for the support of all of you, the many friends and family of our students and student-athletes, and athletics and recreation programs. I hope you will also take a moment to reflect on what you are grateful for this holiday season and reflect on those that made your Wellesley experience so special.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year and Go Blue!

Being a member of the Friends of Athletics National Committee has given @wellesleybball alumna Sefi Adasi Lucki '07 another window into the world of Wellesley's amazing student-athletes. During committee meetings, she always looks forward to the “mission moment,” a time when student-athletes reflect on the impact that Wellesley Athletics has had on their lives and a chance for her to reflect on her own experience.

“During the first game of my senior year at Wellesley I tore my ACL, a season-ending injury. As one can imagine, I was devastated. I will never forget the support I felt from my teammates, friends, professors, and coaches like Kathy Hagerstrom. They all lifted me up, visiting me in the hospital after my surgery and helping me during my recovery. I will forever be grateful to them for their love and support during such a challenging time. I think a lot about all of the student-athletes who also missed seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and I hope they felt the same level of support from the Wellesley community that I did my senior year.” #earnthew  #heynowblue
