DANGEROUS LIAISONS at IU Cinema | Glenn Close: The Art of the Character

Costume designer James Acheson received an Academy Award for Dangerous Liaisons, in which Close played the Marquise de Merteuil, the scheming aristocrat, former lover, and rival of John Malkovich’s Valmont. Their mutual devotion to manipulation and seduction as a means of wielding power binds them, even as their plot unravels and their betrayals multiply. Construction of one’s social self, status, and appearance in 18th-century France are significant themes running through the film, and costuming becomes nearly a character itself.

Art-side Chat: Dürer’s Books: The Art of Building the Lilly Library’s Collections

Join Joel Silver, director of the Lilly Library, and student-curator Leah Marie Chizek for some fascinating insights into the Library’s distinguished collection of books by Albrecht Dürer. Dürer made innovative use of early printed books to publish his art as well as his theoretical writings on a large scale. Yet without the remarkable efforts of subsequent collectors and institutions like the Library, his legacy would not be nearly as well-known to us as it is today, almost five hundred years later. Joel and Leah will discuss how the Lilly Library has acquired its extraordinary holdings, a story that kicks off during the “Dürer Renaissance” of the 16th century and sees the artist’s work collected and passed down through the ages by enthusiasts around the globe until finding a home right here in Bloomington, Indiana
