St. Robert Bellarmine: Bridging Two Worlds
Michael C. McFarland, SJ

This month, the Gregorian University held a conference on St. Robert Bellarmine titled “Revisiting Bellarmine: Between Theology, Philosophy and History,” on the four hundredth anniversary of his death. It was sponsored by Fairfield University, whose patron is Robert Bellarine, and the Gregorian University Foundation. It was especially appropriate for the Gregorian to do this retrospective, because St. Robert was so closely tied to its predecessor, the Roman College. He had studied there upon entering the Jesuits in 1560, then was called back there to teach in 1576 by the school’s great patron Pope Gregory XIII. In 1592, Pope Clement VIII appointed him Rector of the Roman College, observing that “the Church of God had not his equal in learning.” In 1599 he was made a Cardinal, in which capacity he served the Church as pastor, theologian, diplomat and administrator in a wide variety of situations until his death in 1621.

18 November 2021

GUF Washington, DC reception was held at the University Club. Trustee David Ralston served as emcee and introduced the three Gregorian alumni speakers.

Fr Robert Boxie,  STB 2015 and STL 2017 took the podium first and shared, "....at the Greg, I would argue, is where the world comes to study, where the Church comes to meditate, to reflect, to grow in intellectual formation, to live and breathe and inhale the tradition of the Church so that we can be sent out literally as missionaries to the four corners of the world proclaiming the Catholic faith .....to those to whom we minister....So if Rome is he place where the world gathers, the Greg is where the Church comes to study."

Dr Sofia Markovich has her JCL from the Greg and just completed her JCD at The Catholic University of America. She has been appointed as the first woman Metropolitan Judge and Moderator of the Tribunal Chancery at the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Washington. As a lay woman, she shared her experiences at the Greg as being taught a balance between theology and the law and was most grateful for the Jesuit education she received that prepared her well.

Msgr Peter Vaghi, STB 1984, STL 1988 told the crowd that of all the privileged educational opportunities he has had, the Greg stretched him the most academically and personally. There he experienced a University of Nations and the universality of the student body where "I met seminarians and women religious from around the world and some continue to be my friends today."  He closed by telling all that for his past 36 years, all his homilies, books and lectures have all been influenced by his time and studies at the Greg.

Moral Theology and Amoris Laetitia / Call for papers

The target of the conference is to celebrate the five-year anniversary of Amoris Laetitia (AL), in response to the invitation of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life. Believing that these papal teaching has continuing significance both for the theology of marriage and the family and for moral theology in general, the conference aims to explore the critical issues, the provocations, and the ideas that emerged from the Apostolical Exhortation, seeking to understand them in greater depth and to further explore applications towards articulating an evolving theological-moral reflection on, and its pastoral implications.
