Optimal use of antibiotics in animals? There’s an app for that
John Conly, Dana Jelinski, Herman Barkema
A new tool to help veterinarians combat AMR has been developed though a collaboration between the University of Calgary, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), and Stewardship of Antimicrobials by Veterinarians Initiative working with Firstline – Clinical Decisions. “This app gives veterinarians guidelines for prescribing antibiotics for species-specific conditions. This is a novel tool which we hope will help promote the optimal use of antibiotics with the aim of reducing antimicrobial resistance,” says Dr. John Conly. Read the full article here.

Health Canada has approved the Pfizer COVID vaccine for kids. Here’s what you need to know
Jim Kellner
Health Canada is set to authorize the Pfizer COVID vaccine for use in children, meaning one of the biggest pediatric vaccination efforts in the country’s history will soon be underway. The vaccine for children, aged five to 11, uses the same mRNA technology as the adult version, but is about one-third the size. Dr. Jim Kellner, a professor of pediatrics at the UofC who also sits on the federal COVID-19 immunity task force, says he doesn’t know exactly what Pfizer’s reasoning is, but says dividing up adult doses into smaller amounts would be “error prone.” Read the full article here.

Pandemic or endemic, testing is first step in preventing serious health outcomes
Dylan Pillai
Test, trace, isolate: three words that after 20 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re all familiar with. Without the first step — testing — the chain reaction of response is slowed, and mitigation of the infection becomes much harder. Dr. Dylan Pillai, a local leader in COVID-19 testing was selected as a Peak Scholar in COVID-19 Innovation Excellence for his work developing a highly accurate, ultra-sensitive DNA-based point-of-care COVID-19 test. The test uses a technique called loop mediated amplification (LAMP) which detects the viral genetic material from a nose or throat swab. LAMP does not require expensive laboratory equipment and the result can be seen without instrumentation. Read more here.
