GIWS researchers set up a wastewater monitoring program that’s become the province’s sole reliable source for data on the prevalence of COVID-19. Now they have published a paper that provides a blueprint for other scientists to emulate their work.

Crop, forestry residues fuel USask, industry green project
With Saskatchewan’s north home to a boreal forest that’s larger than Germany, and its south making up nearly half of Canada’s cropland, the province’s agriculture and lumber industries alone annually produce about 24 million tonnes of biomass residue.

USask research finds substance derived from tire debris is toxic to two trout species
Now, researchers from the GIWS have reported in the American Chemical Society’s Environmental Science & Technology Letters that exposure to 6PPD-quinone at environmentally relevant levels can also be deadly for rainbow and brook trout, though not for Arctic char or white sturgeon.

Ceres, in partnership with the Valuing Water Finance Initiative, commissioned the Global Institute of Water Security at the University of Saskatchewan for a first-of-its-kind comprehensive scientific review and analysis of industry impacts on freshwater resources around the world. This report analyzes the global role and impacts that industries are having on water systems, including their impact on water use, pollution, water flow alterations, and broader hydrologic system disruption. It also examines the longterm exposure that different industry sectors are facing from escalating water risks and the actions that companies can take to mitigate those risks.

Celebrating the Canoe: Stories Behind Iconic Canadian Paintings in the Remai Modern Canoe exhibit
The canoe has been called one of the Seven Wonders of Canada. An ancient mode of transportation, it did much to build the modern country we know as Canada. As Roy MacGregor, author of Canoe Country: The Making of Canada has stated, “I think [the canoe] connects you to who we are and how we got here.”
The University of Saskatchewan, in cooperation with Remai Modern, is pleased to present a free public presentation on the canoe in Canadian art, illustrated with slides of paintings in the museum’s Canoe exhibit.
Exhibit runs until May 8, 2022.

Isotope Tracers in Catchment Hydrology
This course will introduce graduate students and researchers to the principles of stable isotope geochemistry applied to catchment hydrology and more broadly, to environmental research in the hydrosphere and biosphere. The course will focus on stable isotope measurement and tracing techniques and the linkage of these tracers in and among hydrologic and biological components of earth system at the catchment scale.
