Air Strike On Russian Fuel Depot
A Russian official has alleged that Ukrainian Armed Forces are responsible for an air strike on an oil depot in Belgorod, 25 miles (40km) from the border and just under 50 miles (80km) from Kharkiv. Two workers were injured in the resulting blaze, and firefighting efforts continue with over 200 firefighters and 60 special units engaged. Writing on Telegram, Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov claimed two Ukrainian helicopters entered Russian territory at low altitude and fired on the storage facility with video footage, though still unverified, corroborating some details of this account. Ukraine has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but if confirmed, it would mark the first instance of Ukrainian aircraft carrying out operations in Russia. A Kremlin spokesman stated the situation would not contribute to favorable conditions for ongoing negotiations with Kyiv.

Economic Protests Turn Violent
Angered by shortages of food, fuel, and power, dozens of anti-government protesters were injured and arrested after storming barricades near Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence. Hundreds of protesters gathered to call for Rajapaksa's resignation due to the current economic crisis. According to witnesses, the protest began peacefully, but turned violent after teargas and water cannons were fired by police. Currently, Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst economic crises in over 70 years. With demanding debt obligations and dwindling reserves, the country is struggling to pay for imported goods. In turn, Sri Lankans have to wait in long lines for food and fuel, as well as having to endure power outages for multiple hours daily.

Farthest Individual Star Identified
The most distant individual star ever imaged has been discovered by astronomers through the Hubble Space Telescope. Formed 12.8 billion years ago, this star was formed about 900 million years after the Big Bang. It has been nicknamed Earendel, an Old English name that means morning star or rising light. Previously, the oldest identified individual star was also spotted by Hubble, formed 9.4 billion years ago. A technique called gravitational lensing, where gravities from clusters of galaxies closer to Earth act as a lens that magnifies smaller objects in the background, allowed for Earendel to be spotted. Current data leads astronomers to believe that Earendel is some 50 times larger than our sun and 1 million times brighter. Hubble has spotted galaxies 300 million to 400 million years after the Big Bang, but the individual stars within them are nearly impossible to identify.

Yesterday's Answer
Q: Q: Thanks to its volcanic heritage, which famous island is known for its black sand beaches and is home to the only inhabited caldera in the world?

A: Santorini, Greece
In the 1600s BC, a massive volcanic eruption took place at Thera (modern day Santorini) and completely changed its topography. The catastrophic eruption not only shaped the island, but the remaining pumice ash and volcanic lava eventually mixed in with sand to give Santorini its famous black sand beaches. Cave homes, called yposkafa, were originally used by poorer residents due to their low cost and easy construction. Some settlements of Santorini are built directly on the edge of the caldera cliff, following the natural angles of the landscape. The yposkafa can be found throughout Santorini, and the architecture and designs are dependent on their location on the island, as they are built to be congruent with nature.
